Political squabbling over student loans continues

WASHINGTON (CNN) - With time running out for Congress to prevent a doubling of interest rates on federal student loans, the White House and Republican leaders exchanged accusations Thursday on who was to blame for the lack of an agreement.

President Barack Obama chided Republicans for holding up a deal with unreasonable demands, and he urged college students to continue raising their voices on the issue.

However, spokesmen for Republican leaders in the House and Senate denied an assertion by press secretary Jay Carney that the White House has been working with them to try to reach a deal.

Asked about GOP complaints that the White House has not reached out to Republicans on the issue in recent days, Carney said that "we are actively working with members of Congress to get this done," adding, "in both parties."

Spokesmen for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, disputed Carney's account.

On the Senate floor, McConnell accused Obama and Democrats of playing political games on the issue.

"It is the Democrat-led Senate that has failed to act and the president who has failed to contribute to a solution, and the reason is obvious," McConnell said. "It was reported yesterday that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is launching a website with a student loan countdown clock aimed at raising money off this issue. The implication is that Republicans are the ones dragging their feet. "

The house agreed to do this right after Obama mentioned it, but as usual it's the senate that is the hold up.

The way the GOP will fund it is by taking money form preventive medicine in the health bill and that means one thing women will not have preventive checkups so another shot in the war on women plus students.

If these students are so smart, bright, and will earn more than the average American, then why are they not willing to help their country? The greatest generation in the world were willing to sacrifice their lives for the USA. The current generation is whining about interest rates?

This president is messed up. He has been talking about this 3% increase for quite some time. What are we talking about – under $1000 a year per student? 4K additional over 4 years? It is time to move on from this issue unless you can cut the money from another progrma to pay for it. If not, oh well.

I am sure you and I could come up with billions that could be trimmed and used for better programs. Obama's plan? Raise taxes...

Reading some of the comments on this page convinces most that this country is sliding in the wrong direction.

The Supreme Court is now bought off, the NRA owns the Republicans and every moron in the country now feels it necessary to own a gun for personal safety while Romney wants to Fire Cops and teachers!

We have the largest incarceration of people in the free world; racism is still an obvious element in this political race, mainly by the Rightwing of the GOP.
Congress is totally bought and paid for by corporate oligarchies and we still tell the world that we are the best..

We are in decline and if we do not turn it around, we will just become another third world country as many have in the past.

      B. This country is sliding in the wrong direction. We do not have a leader who can bring people together to solve problems. He just blames everyone else for his misgivings. He is already a lame duck and leaders from other countries are treating him that way.
Where did you hear Romney wanted to fire teachers, Firefighters and Cops? Given that many of the union people are pencil pushers that need to go why wouldn't he start with them? Or maybe the several hundred teachers that are on probation in NY? Cali just laid off the teacher of the year because of tenure. I assume you would blame Obama for that...
Hate and racisim is worse today than when Obama took office. You figure it out. We are in decline because of people like you. The person in charge of the mess right now is Obama and you feel the need to blame others (Romney, Repubs,).
Hopefully the supreme court will follow the rule of law and Obamacare will be shot down.
Guns are a right for Americans. Again, Obama sent guns to drug lords and you say nothing about that, but you call law abiding citizens who own guns morons. You are the moron.

The quote here is not supported by the actual data. States that generally vote democratic are the states with higher average IQs. Google it.

If the rates go up the average student loan payments would go up by $10 a month! Not exactly a devastating amount! Big deal over nothing!

    the College degree scam

The Education Complex has created this stigma that somehow you are
lacking if you don't have a college degree. If everyone has a college
degree, then by definition that degree is devalued and not worth the
paper it is written on. This is evident by the fact the many
organizations are requiring a master degree to be eligible for
management. I find this offensive. It is obviously in their own self
interest to perpetuate this myth. Now that everyone believes this myth,
they tell you that if you take out a $50,000 easy government loan and be
a slave to the payments for the rest of your life you will have a good
job and be fulfilled.Right, while you end up living with your parents
because you can't find a job. If you were poor you are now poor and in
debt up to your neck. Many will be in debt for most of their lives with
no value from their worthless degree

a college degree does not guarantee a job

It is good to hear if students loan rates will be hold and manage to stop on increasing. Loans contributes big help to a student's financial problem.
