Obama blames "scheduling conflict" for missing NAACP

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama's re-election campaign insisted a "scheduling conflict" is behind the president's decision to skip this year's NAACP convention.

"We declined a few weeks ago and [the] NAACP was pleased [Vice President Joe Biden] was able to attend," a campaign official told CNN.

While the president's schedule appeared to be wide open for Thursday–raising questions as to why his campaign cited "scheduling conflicts"–CNN confirmed Thursday morning that Obama and his wife, Michelle, are sitting down for an interview with CBS News.

The president also holds his daily briefing with senior aides and advisers on Thursday.

Hilary Shelton, the NAACP Washington Bureau director and a senior vice president in the organization, said the White House never confirmed a visit.

“They were trying to work out something," Shelton said. As to why Obama could not attend, he added, "It was that something could not be moved. Something was crucial. And unfortunately, they couldn’t move it in a way they could get him here this week.”

Obama addressed the convention in 2009 and last year Michelle Obama spoke to the group.

The White House and Obama's re-election campaign have been hit with questions on the matter especially after presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney addressed the group Wednesday.

The former Massachusetts governor was booed during his remarks when he vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Obama's signature health care law.

Biden is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Thursday at the annual convention in Houston, Texas.

Thursday is the final day of the five-day conference.

He has spoken to the NAACP several time so it does not matter he has a Vice-President and he did a terrific job. The African American people understand it is not a factor.

You say "The African American people understand it.." How is it that every single African American would think the exact same way?

It appears that the last hold out for racism in this country is the NAACP.

Right, the problem is he said he had a conflict in scheduling and he did not. The fact that he has Biden has nothing to do whit him blowing off this crowd. He know he has their votes so he takes them for granted.

He is one man with many commitments. Who doesn't want his ear. Let's be fair. Let's not lose sight of the good he has done over a meeting he could not attend. I don't care if his schedule says he is WIDE open. I'm sure everything is not listed on his agenda. I am certain you will not see, "Take out Osama Bin Laden" if you thumb through his calendar. 🙂

How many at the NAACP had to show their IDs to get in?

Every one that applauded at Biden's comment on Voters Rights being subverted by requiring IDs to vote.

well...most of the seats were empty for biden...probably would have been the same turn out if bo showed... obama knows he is finished and he certainly don't want to face the NAACP knowing he blew the first black presidency.

additionally: obamas has demonstrated often that he will not accept responsibility and he hates being put on the spot with questioning...a died in the wool narcissistic personality.

Sounds like a specious excuse. The campaign didn't know when the NAACP was going to hold their convention?

Obama blames a scheduling conflict for not attending the convention but he has time to schedule dinners with George Clooney, Sarah Jessica Parker and other movie stars. He doesn't care about you, he knows he has your vote. If he were white, I know you would not vote him back into office. Look at the pictures where he is campaigning. Look at the people behind him, mostly white people and Hispanics. He is dumping U.S. citizens under the bus to give a pass to illegal immigrants. Free Medicaid, free food stamps, free housing, welfare, but he wants to cut Social Security & Medicare for people who worked hard all their lives and had this taken from their checks so they would have it when they got older.

Ranger:Are you a veteran? Or is that just your name that you chose? How are we wiinnng Iraq at $12 billion a month after 6 years? Winning from whom, the Shias or the Sunnis? Are we in power or just an occupying force? Should we stay there another 6 years? What exactly are we wiinnng? I'm guessing you are not a veteran and you may not be employed either because you have so much time to email on this site and probably a dozen others. Why do you suppose more enlisted men and women are voting for Obama than McCain? Maybe they are tired after four and five deployments with no end in sight and constantly changing goals. How's the fight going in Afghanistan, did we catch the man behind 9-11? Oh we didn't? Maybe you think we did and any day we're going to find the WMD or any evidence of the imminent threat from a dirty bomb about to be launched from Iraq all the way to the U.S. The only thing funny about you is that 6 years later, you still believe the Right Wing lies. Even most right wingers don't believe it any more. Come to think of it, you aren't funny. Just sad.Joe
