Obama's family tree connection to first African American slave (CNN) –His family tree has been linked to Brad Pitt, Sarah Palin and both Presidents Bush but now President Barack Obama may be related to the first documented African slave in pre-revolutionary America. Ancestry.com, which bills itself as the world's largest online family history resource, on Monday released research and documents which it says shows the first indentured African American servant is an ancestor of President Obama's mother. "We have two of the most significant Africans in our country's history being directly related to each other," Joseph Shumway, an Ancestry.com genealogist, told CNN. Shumway was part of a team of four genealogists who say they worked more than 500 hours to establish the connection between Obama's family and that of John Punch, an indentured servant who was sentenced to a life of slavery after an unsuccessful escape attempt in colonial Virginia. The Ancestry.com researchers found the new connection to the president's African roots through an unlikely link, that of Obama's Caucasian mother. President Obama's African American roots had previously been tied to his father's Kenyan birth. But as genealogists were pouring through documents tracing Stanley Ann Dunham’s ancestors, they found a connection to the Bunch family which had recently published DNA evidence that they had roots in sub-Saharan Africa. (see documents here) This was the "spark" that piqued the team's interest in tracing Obama's roots in the pre-revolutionary era African American community. Yet the greatest obstacle was the volume of records that had been lost or destroyed over the last three hundred plus years. The researchers had to use clues to cobble together some of the facts. For instance, when trying to determine the age of a particular descendent, a researcher might use land records together with the knowledge that in order to purchase land in revolutionary America a man must have been at least 21 years old. Through these deductions genealogists were able to trace the president's lineage to a Caucasian family in revolutionary Virginia named Bunch. But the question remained: were any sub-Saharan Africans also members of the Bunch family? Shumway said the team "gleaned" every possible clue and came to the conclusion the Caucasian Bunch family was indeed related to African American John Punch. "[A]ll of the surviving evidence we studied very strongly points to conclusion John Bunch is the son of John Punch," said Shumway. For instance, in 1640 population counts show there were only 150 Africans living in pre-revolutionary Virginia. Shumway points to other clues such as the phonetic similarities between Bunch and John Punch's name. He says that in colonial times spellings were not standardized and genealogists routinely find the same surname spelled quite differently. In addition Shumway found evidence that the family that owned the slave John Punch married and lived for generations with members of the Bunch family. "[A] lot of pieces of circumstantial evidence pointed at John Punch as the only logical candidate who could fit as this African American ancestor," of the Bunch family said Shumway. Ancestry.com has been researching Obama's genealogy since he became a candidate for president in 2008. "We felt this was an incredibly significant discovery," Shumway said. |

Many Caucasian American today have African-American ancestry and they don't know it. Now their descendants have no clue about their ancestry. If you are suspicious about your ancestry take off your cloth and if you see certain parts of your body (especially between your legs) looks darker than other parts; there is a chance you have an ancestor that was of African descent.

It amazes me how we get so up set on whether President Obama is considered black. That was the law made by some whites that if you have a certain amount of black blood, you were considered black. Historians make assumptions based on factual data and understanding of the time period they are studying. Duh. Did you skip all of your social studies classes in high school?

Technically this is science, and scientists make Hypothesis, not assumptions. Assumptions are the downfall of any scientific venture.
Ancestry.com researchers are not historians. They are genealogists. An historian looks at all facts to make an often educated guess as to family connections. Genealogists look only at existing genealogical records and do a lot of fill in the blanks. This is why it is so easy to buy those nice heraldry plaques with your family crest because all it requires is that the name be close.
With families of nobility it is easy to do family trees back many generations but for common people, including Barack Obama going back more than a few generations is highly complex and prone to mistakes. Going back to 1640 in slave populations is very near impossible to get anything accurate.
Now it doesn't really matter one way or the other. Barack Obama is not John Punch and more than 300 years of history separate the two.
What is odd is that this comes at a time when Obama is working very hard to recreate a public myth for the election.
I don't want Romney to try to pretend to be a blue collar working Joe because he is not. He is wealthy. Some of that wealth was given him and some of it he worked hard for. Be proud of it. Nor do I want Obama to pretend to be part of some racially motivated slave mythos as if he was only just freed from bondage. he is mixed race, as much white as black and from a middle class upbringing who is now socially prominent and wealthy. Well the article did say that Obama's "slave roots" came from his caucasion mother which traced her ancestry from the Bunch family. From what I could glean from the article is that the Bunch family owned a slave named John Punch who had a son name John Bunch.

Sari, while the CNN article does not mention it, the research they are reporting on does confirm that if this is President Obama's ancestry then there were indeed more SLAVE OWNERS in the President's family tree than slaves. In fact, given when the offspring of John Punch were posited to have been born, and given that they were born to a white mother, the only slave in the President's family tree was John Punch and the rest were all free individuals, some of whom were confirmed slave owners. You should actually go read the reports on which this highly selective article was written before telling somebody else to re read the article.

If we accept that John Bunch (the ancestor of President Obama) is the son of John Punch, then was John Punch really the first slave as we would historically consider slavery as differentiated from indentured servitude?
After all, rather than his legitimate children inheriting his status as an indentured servant for life, they were born free men and became slave OWNERS based upon the documents used to determine the chronological link which is an essential component of the claim that the Bunch family is descended from John Punch.

My biggest complaint is the article referring to the Revolutionary era – it isn't, it's the Colonial Era and over a century before the Revolution.
Also the first slaves came over in 1619, not 1640, so Punch may be the first documented slave, but he was hardly the first one.

I think my heritage goes way back to some people who lived a long time ago in another part of the world. Knowing all this, I do not feel one bit different. Know why? Actually, during the pre & early Revolutionary War period, Whites and African Americans worked along side each other in indentured servitude. I was reading a fiction book book by a research writer when I discovered this. I was quite dismayed that my history classes never mentioned this, even in college. Racial-based slavery was not always so for the Colonies. It's entirely possible for many White people to have Black ancestors, as they were societal equals during those times. This new discovery has no bearing on my vote, either way. It's rather inconsequential to me.

The story is sloppy, and so I suspect the research. No DNA test can substantiate this story nor is there a paper trail that can substantiate this story. Are there "white" families that contain "subSaharan" DNA. Certainly – because the first kid in the cradle of mankind was a subSaharan all "whites" have "subSaharan" DNA . Are there "black" families with "white" DNA. Certainly – because DNA testing is turning up "white" DNA in a majority of "blacks" tested. All this proves is that all of mankind is closely related. But it would be a stretch to say Obama is related as described in this story lacking definitive evidence.

It is amazing that those who read the article overlooked the fact that the first slaves were both Black and White. Many poor Whites were enslaved by the Capitalists (job creators) that many worship today. During slavery every Black and poor White had a job with no wages. Wake up!

Whatever twit wrote this piece. AHEM, an indentured servant is NOT a slave. Indentured servants could buy themselves out of the job. Slaves never had that option. If you're gonna publish "historical" pieces at least have them written by some one who understands history not some educated twit.

If this is the best that Ancestry.com has, they are in sore need of recontruction. This Hack tied the Bunch Clan of Scotland (of the McIntyre’s) to a light skinned slave with the name Bonce. My genetic study says they are WRONG. The first Bunch arrived in Virgina in 1656 as Indentured Servant. He never owned Slaves or Indentured Servants! There is no record of the BUNCH family (of which my wife has cataloged over 9000 persons) ever having Slaves. My wife has been accumulating records over the last 10 years.
For the record the ‘Bonces’ are part of the ‘Bruce’ family of Scotland.

Between 620,000 and 750,000 died during the Civil War to end that mistake. Still took another 100 years to recognize the civil rights of people of color. This Kook-aid is really poisoned. Basing their conclusions on far too many suppositions and assumptions (the name sounds similar) is irresponsible genealogy. I'm ashamed of Ancestry.com (I am a share-holder) for fostering this kind of baloney. While white male/black female couplings occurred frequently in colonial America (usually overseers and indentured males deprived of white female opportunities, as opposed to owners, couplings of black males with white females were rare and no way to hide the offspring in white households. Far too fanciful to credit this connection. As Mark Twain once said about an associates writings, "It should not be lightly tossed aside. It should be thrown forcibly."
When Obama proudly proclaimed "you didn't build that" he was projecting the reality that he himself could not be where he is today without the conspiracy of others to put him there.

Something is wrong with this story. An indentured servant is not a slave. There were indentured servants on the Mayflower – someone paid their passage to the new world and they were indentured to that person until the debt was paid off. So is that the case here, or does the writer not know the difference between slavery and indentured servitude? And if the story is correct, it just goes to show that Zero's family hasn't gotten any brighter with the passage of time.
Get it? Harvard educated Obama was a SLAVE. We OWE him a second term.

Personally, I think this research is rather spurious. Obama’s tree, via his mother, traces back to a Nathaniel Bunch (1793-1859). Nathaniel’s father was Charles Bunch (1765-1792). My own research indicates His ancestors were:
Samuel Bunch (1726-1782), born in Virginia, married Mary Hudson
John Bunch Jr (1690-1742) born in Virginia, married Rebecca Harrison
John Bunch (1662-1729), born in Virginia, married Temperance Bates
Thomas Bunce (1612-1682), born in England and died in CT, married Sarah Bull
