Lionel, projections likely point to 1.7 percent economic growth for the month of August. The economy is stagnant, hardly rating as a comeback. True, GM and Chrysler both reported an increase in sales with GM 14 percent and Chrysler 10 percent. However, GM also reported a 6 percent drop for July. This is small by comparison to VW at 60 percent and Toyota at 40 percent. One reason for the increase in sales for August, the increase cost of gas. People are buying more fuel efficient cars. Unemployment will likely be 8.3 percent, again. In case you haven't noticed, unemployment is not improving, it is getting worse. How can you possibly believe this is a good recovery? Even economists state this is the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression.
Howard, in a perfect world we would not have had the REPUBLICAN mess to begin with, but since it did happen and we are not in a perfect world one would think that the republicans would at least own up to their mess. NO! All they have done for the past four years is thought of EVERY conceivable way to make sure Obama fail. Now that people see their ugliiness in the light of day, they have become bolder and resorts to blatant LIES.
I am an independent voter who want nothing but the truth and I have to say that Obama is winning by fairly good margins on truth telling.
Caramon, there are a very good reasons this is the slowest recovery since the Great Depression. One, the republicans have purposely refused to work with the president and blocked everything, even things they normally support and know would be good for our economy. What is worse, they PLANNED to sabotage this president for their own political advantage in the second worse time in our nation's history. Second, there has been only two time in our nations history where all sectors of the economy was failing and this was the second and the first was the Great Depression. Whether you accept the facts or not, the truth is we are much better off today than we were the day President Obama took office. When President Obama took office, we were in a housing bubble bust, our financial markets were crashing, the DOW had lost almost 6000k points, the auto industry was collasping, the employment sector was losing 400k – 700k jobs per month, the unemplyment rose to almost 10 percent, ecetera.
Today, hundreds of thousands of homeowner have been able to refinance and the market is stablizing, the banks have been restructured and have almost 3 trillion dollars on their books doing nothing. The DOW is consistently hovering above 13000. He saved the auto industry and the taxpayers are interest on their investment. The employment has come a million miles away from losing more than 3-4 hundred-thousand jobs to gaining jobs for 24 plus straight months.
Considering the shape the Republicans left country in, you tell me, if President Obama had failed what would our economy look like today. The Republicans who destroyed our country do not have the right to complain about how fast it is recovering, especially, when everyone, except blind constituents, know they are being disingenuous about their efforts.
James, In the perfect world which you describe, George Bush was totally responsible for the economic recession. However, the Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate. Do you not feel that they should share some of the blame? Is it not possible that Democrats, with substantial warnings, intended the recession to occur in order to gain control of the White House. It is almost impossible to believe that George Bush could have so much control over the economy when President Obama does not. And, if you recall, during the first 2 years of the Obama presidency, the Republicans couldn't stop a toilet. ACA passed. How then do you believe the Republicans could have stopped economic recovery?

Camaron, I do not think that any party is all to blame, but when the the president's party is in control I think you would agree that they bare most of the blame. That said, we must also remember the minority parties power to filibuster. It is not as powerful as having the majority control, but it is useful in slowing things down. From 2000 – 2008 George Bush had veto power and a number of years of congressional control, and pushing the republican agenda suring the years of republican control is all that was needed to set up for the catastrophe of 2008. The first 2 years of Obamas presidency was filled with fighting fires and trying to head off the spread of fires. It was less about a democratic agenda, and more about keeping us from falling into depression. The issues were very large, very complex and multiple.
What I remember is that everytime the president tried to solicit the republicans for bipartisan support, they came to the table and evenually found a reason to walk away. In all my years of following politics, I found this to be quite strange. I did not know whether the president was being intrenched or if republicans were holding fast to ring conservative principles without compromise. The more I found out about the meetings they had on inauguration day and Mitch McConnell's and a host of other unsettling things, I begin to think that no matter what this president did they would not work with him. And sadly enough, my conclusion came true. There is enough evidence to prove that republicans have not dealt with this president fairly. I agree with you the both parties bare blame, but as it relates to working with the president, most of the blame, by evidence, belong to the republicans.
Well James, you make some good points. However, not everything done by Congress comes before the President for veto. I believe the housing bubble, one cause of the recession, was avoidable. This I blame much on Barney Franks. He had been warned about Frannie Mae. His response was there is no problem.
Perhaps the Republicans could have compromised more. It is difficult to tell what the President's version of compromise is. Even with the filibuster and other problems associated with the Republicans, spending has gone completely out of control. To add to this, the Senate has yet to approve a budget. To me this is a slap in the face of the tax payer. Yet, the economy still goes nowhere.

Not necessarily true Judy. The working population is growing faster than job creation. For every 1 job created, the economy needs to create 2 more. That would mean unemployment will continue to rise along with need for more government assistance. This leads to more government spending, more money taken out of the private sector where we need jobs to be created and higher deficits. It is an endless cycle. In what way is this a move Forward?

In the way that we are not losing 400 – 700 thousand a month! You are right that we need to pick the pace of job creation, but that cannot happen unless the demand for goods and services pick-up. This is why the administration is focused on the middle-class, because if they have money, they are more likely to spend it thereby churning the cycle of demand. So Caramon, we have two ways of doing it; one, letting private industry take a chance, which I doublt they will do, or two, let the government invest in needed project for the country. And do not try telling me that we just need to cut spending. There is no way in hades we are going to cut our way out of this. Europe should have taught us that lesson by now.
You are correct that cutting spending is not the only thing necessary to drive the economy. But, ACA, continued increases in regulation and other potential taxes have all created an atmosphere of uncertainty among private industries. Companies do not hire because they do not know what future costs will be. Joe Biden's little speech on putting the chains back on doesn't help nor does it give incentive for future business. Infrastructure jobs only supports a small portion of the middle class. Not every middle class worker wants to work on roads and bridges, or become police or firefighters. People go to college to become accountants, civil engineers, lawyers, microbiologists. How will these infrastructure jobs create opportunity for them. Why do people believe there isn't a better way to drive the economy than Obama's way?
Caramon, I do not believe that Obama's way is the only way. I believe that of the options currently presented, his is the best approach. We need a mulipronged approach that will require government and business working together. Business must recognize it's failings that has contributed to the challenges to our economic struggles. There has been no increases in taxes in this administration, yet. But we will have to start getting revenue from somewhere if we are going to pay down our debt. I agree that Joe Biden could have left out that statement, but I doubt that it made a difference in any company hiring someone. If the demand is there a company will hire. In some way or another the economy is integrated. You fuel a construction company that money flows throughout many sectors of the job markert. This effort energizes the hope for other companies to take a chance to capitalize on that economic push. One of my fears is having someone trying to undo the progress that we have made and end up making another problem. I say let us stick with what we know and encourage the administration to build a closer working relationship with business. to increase the number jobs per month.
