Energized Obama touts new jobs report in Virginia, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio (CNN) - Appearing newly energized amid the release of a better-than-expected jobs report, President Obama touched down in rain-soaked Cleveland, Ohio Monday and warned that a President Romney would bring the country’s economic recovery to a halt.

“This morning, we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level since I took office,” the president told a crowd that local officials say numbered 9,000. “More Americans entered the workforce. More people are getting jobs.”

The stop was the second of the president’s day. Earlier Friday, he rallied 2,000 supporters in Northern Virginia, delivering substantially the same remarks as those in Cleveland.

Plouffe questions Romney's disavowal of "47%" remarks

,

In brief comments to reporters on Friday, White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe questioned the credibility of Mitt Romney’s most recent attempts to distance himself from controversial comments delivered at a private fundraiser last May.

“I think he said they were inelegant,” Plouffe said, referring to Romney’s initial reaction to recordings of his “47%” comments. “There is no elegant way to attack half the country, say they’re victims, say they won’t take responsibility. These are teachers. These are veterans. These are seniors. And the most important thing is his policies reflect that approach and that disdain because his entire economic philosophy is geared toward the very wealthy and burdening the middle class.”

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Romney tried to further distance himself from the remarks, telling Sean Hannity his comments were “completely wrong,” despite having defended his meaning at a press conference held the day after the tapes from the fundraiser were made public.

Noting how much time had passed since Romney originally delivered the remarks and his recent attempts to walk away from them, Plouffe added that the GOP nominee’s most recent disavowal should be viewed with some skepticism.

“I would take with a huge grain of salt trying to clean something up five months after you’ve said it for the first time and after you doubled down on it," Plouffe said.

CNNMoney: September jobs report: Unemployment rate tumbles

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - The unemployment rate tumbled in September as more people returned to the labor force and steady hiring continued.

Employers added 114,000 jobs during the month, down from a revised 142,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department said Friday. But revisions to July and August mean the economy added 86,000 more jobs than originally reported in those months.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 7.8% in September, from 8.1% the prior month.

The President's Day Ahead: Campaigning in Virginia and Ohio

President Obama takes off from the South Lawn at 10 AM Friday for campaign events in Fairfax, VA and Cleveland, OH. He'll deliver remarks George Mason University at 10:50 AM and at Cleveland State University at 2:30 PM before returning home to the White House. The Obama campaign released this information about the president's events:

The President will discuss the choice in this election between moving forward with his vision for continuing to create an economy that’s built to last, or going back to the same failed top-down economic policies that crashed our economy and punished the middle class. He will continue to lay out what’s at stake for middle-class families and his plan to continue to restore middle-class security by paying down our debt in a balanced way that ensures everyone pays their fair share and still invest in the things we need to create jobs and grow our economy over the long term, like education, energy, innovation, and infrastructure.

Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest will gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One on the way to Cleveland.

Here's the president's schedule as released by the White House:
