Obama 'confident' about immigration reform in a second term

Davenport, Iowa (CNN) – New details of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term were given in an off-the-record interview with the Des Moines Register Tuesday but made public only after the paper protested that leaving it private would be a disservice to Iowa voters.

The interview was conducted Tuesday but made public Wednesday after the Obama campaign gave permission to the paper releasing them from their off-the-record agreement.

      I wonder what charity will get the 5 million?
      If Obama chooses not to relese his records for 5 million what excuse will you libs come up with? What reason could he have for not releaseing these records?

        You don't graduate Magna Cum Laude from Harvard with bad grades.You don't become President of the Harvard Law organization with bad grades. Are you accusing Harvard University of falsifying the grades of their students? I am just guessing but, I would guess that your own personal grades would not allow you to enter the doorsteps of Harvard as a student.

      This rather brilliantly cuts thru all the political doublespeak we get.
      It puts it into a much better perspective.

      Lesson # 1:

      * U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
      * Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
      * New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
      * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
      * Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000

      Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:

      * Annual family income: $21,700
      * Money the family spent: $38,200
      * New debt on the credit card: $16,500
      * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
      * Total budget cuts so far: $3.85

      Got It ?????

      OK, now Lesson # 2: Here's another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:

      Let's say, You come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood....and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.

      What do you think you should do ......
      Raise the ceilings, or pump out the Sewage?
      Your choice is coming November 6, 2012.

      For Pete's Sake, CNN. "$848 billion in savings will come from winding the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq"? That is such a false statement. The 848 billion for the wars have been borrowed. So if the U.S. stops borrowing the money, this is NOT a savings. It just means the U.S. isn't going into further debt in this one instance. Get it right!

      Yes, he told us in advance what he planned to do. Few were listening.
      The following is a narrative taken from a 2008 Sunday morning televised "Meet The Press'.
      From Sunday's 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, Televised "Meet the Press" THE THEN Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag.
      General Bill Gann' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain WHY he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.
      The General stated to Obama that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...
      During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Or, at the very least, "Stand and Face It".
      NOW GET THIS !!
      'Senator Obama replied:
      "As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides". "There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression." "The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all that sort of thing."
      Obama continued: "The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing'. If that were our anthem, then, I might salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National Anthem as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of warring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails – – – perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments ......"

      When I become President, I will seek a pact of agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation, have placed upon the nations of Islam, an unfair injustice which is WHY my wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past".
      "Of course now, I have found myself about to become the President of the United States and I have put my hatred aside. I will use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new path. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black Family. Indeed, CHANGE is about to overwhelm the United States of America "
      Yes, you read it right.
      I, for one, am speechless!!!

      Obama will win with over 300 votes, the economy will recover, we will end a 2nd war and deficit will actuall start going down. Then in 2016, what will you guys have to say? Everytime you use Hussien you lose credibility with the enuendo. It is like like me asking about Mitt's tax returns or his magic underwear. See, 2 can play that game. If you are a Christian, i would think you would take exception to electing a cult member to the office of POTUS. Almost all Christian religions call Mormonism a cult, rewriting the word that God has already given and in the process, SUPERCEDING the Bible you know with the Book of Mormon they know. Yes, if the two should conflict BOM supercedes the Bible. There you have your 5M response.

        I've pointed out many times the highest every national average price for gasoline was June 2008 at $4.21 per gallon for regular...and my price last evening in central Ohio was $3.12 per gallon for regular.

        And while the Model T boasted 25 MPG in 1908, the average car mileage in 2008 according to the EPA was only at 20.8 MPG! But for Detroit to be bailed out they had to do something that makes your whole gas mileage claim moot.

        Today a 2013 economy model car fuel usage is estimated at 28 mpg city and 38 highway mpg. The 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid gets 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. So, if Detroit can double the mileage of the vehicle that sort of makes your $1.84 mpg rant idiotic and moot. 2 X $1.84 is $3.68 so $3.12 per gallon is less.

        The majority of Americans do not consider putting people who came to this country illegally ahead of people who are trying to get her legally "a good thing", as your post says about the dream act. Your lib views have skewed your mind. Obama had two years with a full dem majority. If he wanted to pass something he could have. He did not, then he went around the law (and congress) and implemented something nobody likes.
        The so called "dream act" would give amnesty to millions of people who either broke the law intentially or unintentially.
        Many illegal immigrants will fraudulently claim they came here as children or that they are under 30. And the federal government has no way to check whether their claims are true or not. THEY ARE UNDOCUMENTED!!!

        October 25, 2012 at 12:13 pm |
      • Caramon

        I think it will be difficult for the President to pass immigration reform, the DREAM act, during his possible second term. He had better opportunity when Democrats controlled both House and Senate. He will need to regain the House and keep the Senate in order to do this. If Republicans pass immigration reform in the house, it will likely sit in the Senate and never come to a vote. If the Senate passes reform, it will be voted down in the House.

        Typing in all capital letters does not make you look better. It makes you look like you are yelling. More people want the Dream Act? No one I know wants the Dream Act. Even people who were from Latin America and South America. These people happen to be US citizens now. They feel rewarding people who broke the law is a bad thing. Many are going through the process to bring more family members here.

        Fact is John if you want to deal with facts, dates, and truth when you harp on something so stupid. then you need to look at all the facts, the truth and quit hiding behind your Bush amnesia.

        George W. Bush's in 2000 when he was a candidate for President for the first time promised immigration reform.

        (George W. Bush 2000 On The Issues

        "Governor Bush believes that immigration is not a problem to be solved, but the sign of a successful nation. As Governor of a border state, he knows first-hand the benefits legal immigrants bring to America. While he is strongly opposed to illegal immigration, he believes more should be done to welcome legal immigrants. Therefore, he will establish a 6-month standard for processing immigration applications, encourage family reunification, and split the INS into two agencies: one focused on enforcement, and one focused on naturalization and immigration services.") Taken directly from the Romney website.

        Bush stated immigration reform was no less than " a sign of a successful nation"

        Well it didn't happen during George W. Bush's first term. Again in 2004 during George W. Bush's second Inaugural address he again promised immigration reform, this due to Kerry having immigration reform as one of his top priority policies....George W. Bush not to be outdone with the Hispanic vote jumped on the reform band wagon yet again.

        Please explain.....Why do I not hear you complaining about Bush promising twice and not getting immigration reform done during a period of 8 years?

        As for Patrick....December may not be shouting, he may be like most seniors eye weary from trying to read script which appears to be printed in a font size that would fit on the head of a pin.

That just seem to mysteriously appear with for no reason on 1/19/2009. You would like us to believe we are dealing with time in a bottle. The first 9 months of 2009 we were still living directly under the Bush Whacked Us Budget.

        And Oh Yes to the rest of you, if it was so important to George W. Bush, in 2000, why didn't he pass it during the 6 years he had a Republican majority in both the House and Senate. Instead of concentrating on getting us into two unfunded wars, and pushing the tax rates so low it tanked the economy.

Don't you think it is about time the left quit using this and abortion for political gain? No other country on earth has these politicized and divisive issues...it just shows how stupid some of these voters are to allow politicians to use them in this way...while really destroying their quality of life, that they take for granted...fools.

    If Immigration reform is so important to him, why didn't he pass it in his first term? Oh wait, he tried. The Senate failed to pass it 4 TIMES! Including once when the Senate Democrat caucus had 60 members (A filibuster proof majority, in case math isn't your strong suit.)

    What makes him think he can pass it now?

    Yeah right, Obama. He's promising what??? He already promised that 4 yrs ago that he'd do it his first year in office. I know I won't agree with his immigration reform...he doesn't think our border with Mexico is a problem, and he wants to hand everything to illegals for free...more welfare, more food stamps, more gov't social programs, free education, free houses, free cell phones, free healthcare, what else?? Meanwhile, illegals drive around with no insurance and commit an increasing amount of crimes.
    The rest of us pay for them. What a great plan that is. How about NO.
    The cartels and Mexican gangs are an increasing problem that is spilling into our country. They are more heinous than Islamic extremists.

    Yes we can move Forward. Beyond the bigotry, the hatred, the policies that caused The Great Recessions, the obstructionists, and the faux anger of the extremists designed to hide ignorance and bigotry. By the way the GDP is growing, housing is improving, Osama Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive. Obama actually cares about 100% of the US.

        Maybe you should run you misinformation past Fact Check, and PolitiFacts...they seem to not agree.

        "Is President Obama’s spending an “inferno,” as Mitt Romney claims, or a binge that “never happened” as an analysis touted by the White House concluded? We judge that both of those claims are wrong on the facts.

        The truth is that the nearly 18 percent spike in spending in fiscal 2009 — for which the president is sometimes blamed entirely — was mostly due to appropriations and policies that were already in place when Obama took office.

        That includes spending for the bank bailout legislation approved by President Bush. Annual increases in amounts actually spent since fiscal 2009 have been relatively modest. In fact, spending for the first seven months of the current fiscal year is running slightly below the same period last year, and below projections."

        But then no one could ever accuse a Repuglitard of telling a factual truth.

    I bet the administration is hoping like heck this storm takes the attention off the falling obama poll numbers, and the Benghazi disaster. Lord knows obama don't want the voters to understand how he allowed the tragedy and loss of lives to enhance his own reelection prospects...obama, we know Africa is comming appart at the seams..and the middle east is on fire due to your leadership (or lack of)...you are not fooling all of the people all of the time.

      And you are both a liar and an idiot. I live in Ohio.

      The problem is you can't deal with facts, dates, and truth so you have to invent lies. Plus you suck at checking sources, or understanding true facts. From the below I would say the current president and George W. Bush were close on the immigration issue....so again tell me why George didn't get it done in 8 years when he had 6 of those years with both a House & Senate Repubican majority...and try using facts and sources.

      "Some in this country argue that the solution is to — is to deport every illegal immigrant and that any proposal short of this amounts to amnesty. I disagree. It is neither wise nor realistic to round up millions of people, many with deep roots in the United States, and send them across the border. There is a rational middle ground between granting an automatic path to citizenship for every illegal immigrant, and a program of mass deportation. That middle ground recognizes that there are differences between an illegal immigrant who crossed the border recently and someone who has worked here for many years, and has a home, a family, and an otherwise clean record. I believe that illegal immigrants who have roots in our country and want to stay should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law, … to pay their taxes, … to learn English … and to work in a job for a number of years. People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship but approval would not be automatic, and they will have to wait in line behind those who played by the rules and followed the law. What I’ve have just described is not amnesty it is a way for those who have broken the law to pay their debt to society, and demonstrate the character that makes a good citizen." George W. Bush from the text of his speech given on immigration – May 15, 2006

      • jerrylax

        I guess you were not listening when President Romney said he would not round up the illegals...he will just make it very difficult for them to stay here, and then they will leave on their own...good idea, and it makes sense. There are a lot of desirable immigrants waiting to come in...we NEED them, badly...so, lets let them in. Those who want to be here can follow the law... Please, just sit down and think about this...and what this obama ideology will do to our country, this obama approach is not new...its been tried and it has failed, repeatedly...this is no game Jean, and it has nothing to do with race or gender. Americans who know what this all means do not support obama...if you can think for yourself you would understand following this king-master is suicide.

        October 28, 2012 at 8:40 pm |

        @ jerryexlax

        Any Somalians voting in Ohio are American citizens, and the last I checked American citizens regardless of their origin are allowed to vote. The key words here are "American citizens".

        "This allegation is not only unfounded but also very dangerous as evidenced by the more than 2000 angry and negative comments that the column has triggered in two days. Accusing a whole law abiding community and portraying U.S. citizens as illegal immigrants because you suspect that they would vote against your candidate or they just look different is also utterly irresponsible."

        Maybe if the Republican candidates in Ohio, and elsewhere had looked at the real world; not their white-sheet world they envisioned the United States to be, Republican candidates would have made the effort to reach out to the Somalian-American citizens in their Ohio districts.

        As for deportation of illegals it is a known fact that the current administration has deported more illegals than the previous administration.

        "As of July 2012, Obama deported 1.4 million illegal immigrants since the beginning of his administration — that’s 1.5 times more immigrants on average than Bush deported every month, according to official numbers from the Department of Homeland Security*. But that’s only part of Obama’s deportation strategy: The administration’s stated goal is to prioritize the deportation of criminal, dangerous illegal immigrants."

        So fact is, you seem pretty ignorant about what is really going on, and wouldn't know the truth if it kicked you. So it seems my first assumption was accurate.

    You bet he's going to fix immigration – because after he gets through with us, nobody will want to come to the United States anymore. Coming from the world of business, owners and managers are waiting to see what happens with the election before they commit to anything. If Obama wins, there will be no opportunity here.

    And can someone please explain to me why nobody has talked about how Obama's motivation for being president again is all about Obama?

    Obama needs to understand that he cannot tout immigration reform without including enforcement of immigration laws he wants in place. Since Obama keeps circumventing immigration laws through non-enforcement, Congress is not going to follow his direcftion, since it is the Congress that creates and changes our laws.

    October 28, 2012 at 8:49 am |
    • Donald H

      If Obama would require enforcement of the present day immigration laws, a lot more American citizens would be back to work. Obama's immigration policies that pander to illegal immigrants are not helping this country recover from our recession. Obama needs to answer to those unemployed Americans why he favors illegal aliens over citizens when jobs are on the line.

    I've never seen a company hire based purely off money in the bank. If people aren't buying their product or service enough to necessitate expanding their staff, why hire? What causes people to buy more products? Money in the PEOPLE'S pockets, not corporations pockets. Companies do not print money. They get their income from people buying their product. The power should always be given to the people, including which companies survive or go out of business based on the people buying or not buying a company's product. This helps ensure quality products, which is the way Capitalism is supposed to work. Staying in business based on free money from the government from tax cuts and subsidies (corporate welfare) is not a quality foundation, which is Romney's plan.

    Bill Clinton was disbarred in Arkansas and was also disbarred in front of the Supreme Court over the Lewinski incident.
    He also paid a $25,000.00 fine over the Lewinski incident. He also paid an $850,000.00 settlement over the Lewinski incident.
    He was also fined $90,000 for giving false testimony in the Paula Jones case.
    So Bill Clinton, a disbarred lawyer, a President who was fined for lying under oath, asks the American people to believe him when he says the best thing for the Country is 4 more years of Obama.
    Just wanted to make sure I had it right!

    Obama will forever be known as the president who divided the country into the haves vs the have nots, the whites vs the blacks, the legal citizens of the US vs the illegal aliens from Mexico. No matter what the subject or issue, Obama finds a way to dig the side that he hates -- that side being either the richest, the whitest, or the most legal. He likes to do whatever he can to upset the apple cart by crossing the tax paying, legal citizens of this country. In other words, he is destroying America.

    Another empty promise from the Liar-in-Chief. He thinks Hispanics are too stupid to remember that he promised that 4 years ago and had a Democrat majority to do it....if he was sincere. They also know that it's another lie that Republicans are against them. If that were the case, why do Republicans consider Senator Marco Rubio a rising star in the Party? And Republican Susana Martinez is the first Latina Governor in the US (another rising star in my opinion). What the Republicans want is comprehensive immigration reform. Hispanics want that too. Not more empty promises from a man who will say anything for a vote.
