'Time for governing:' Obama's re-election puts 'forward' to the test

(CNN) - Democrats are collecting spoils beyond what many predicted, Republicans are licking wounds after a bruising battle, and the country is waking up to the mix of euphoric celebration and bitter disappointment that accompanies the long-awaited end of the election.

But in the lightning speed world of today's politics, the hours since President Barack Obama's re-election victory have allowed the conversation to shift - from what happened to what's next.

"Tonight you voted for action, not politics as usual," Obama said in his rousing victory speech after winning all or virtually all of the key swing states - only Florida remains unknown - in a sweeping electoral victory and decisive popular win.

racism, character assassination, and hate wins the presidency....now what America? You get what you buy, not what you thought!

Obviously...Donald Trump, Sheldon Adelson, Karl Rove, Citizens United, and the Koch brothers didn't get what they paid for....and don't even go there with your character assassination comment. We've seen where that has lead....not a U.S. citizen, a Muslim, a socialist/communist (you could never get which one straight)...all an attempt to delegitimize a sitting president with the constant drumbeat of racial overtones..

As opposed to what the Koch brothers, Citizens United and that ilk were selling....I think the American people were the real winners yesterday. Sorry about your sour grapes.

oh jean...try to stay on topic, for once. This character assassination came from the mouth of your lying Barry/barack master.... the others on the right you mentioned tried to tell you whom you are enslaved by...hahaha

after 4 years, he may as well try giving governing a shot.

    November 7, 2012 at 3:34 pm |
    • jean2009

Actually for the first time after 4 years he may just get some help from the other side of the isle....what you seem to have forgetten is that congress must act before the president has legislation he is willing to sign. It's not the President Stupid.

that notion is belied by the fact that Obama routinely threatens to veto any bill that doesn't meet HIS wishes. How do you pass a bill you know will just get written off by a petulant child?

        November 7, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

TELL ME OF ONE THING THAT HAS ACTUALLY PASSED CONGRESS FOR HIM TO VETO. THAT TELLS YOU WHO THE CHILDREN ARE IN WASHINGTON.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BLAME THE PRESIDENT FOR SOMETHING HE HAS NOT DONE AT LEAST LOOK AT THE WHOLE CHAIN AND PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT REALLY LIES. YOU SOUND FOOLISH JUST LIKE YOUR REPRESENTATIVES IN CONGRESS.

        November 7, 2012 at 3:59 pm |
      • jean2009

So far President Obama has vetoed exactly 2 bills and that doesn't sound very petulant compared to 11 vetos by George W. Bush....as with all vetoed bills, the President using a threat of veto to shape the policy he wishes to prevail....which is his right as the elected President....the Senate however can overide a veto....so you are not making much sense.

If you are annoyed by politics maybe you should consider moving on, and take your sour grapes with you. .

Talk to Herry Reid (D) who has 30+ house bills he refuses to bring up for a vote. And while you're at it, as him to put Obama's last budge proposal up for a vote.

Agreed December. How unfortunate that our Congress has not learned to work together. How many bills has the House passed that still wait for a vote in the Senate. In turn, how many bills have originated in the Senate that have been voted down in the House. I should think both groups should work together on bills that could pass both houses in Congress. The the President could veto if he likes.

        November 7, 2012 at 4:10 pm |
      • jean2009

And Caramon I agree. the road to good governance is a two-way street. Think about Health care here was the exact approach and legislation reached in Massachusetts by Mitt Romney (that he had to disavow), the same legislation agreed on by Nixon and Ted Kennedy, and the exact same system that works very well in Switzerland...but because a Democratic president proposed it the GOP wanted to use play power games to deligitmize a sitting president by bottling it up, and by trying to kill it and every other bill that might make him a two term president,

What did we learn last night ? We learned that Obama's "dirty politics" worked. Lies and slander ruled the day. There will be more of it in the future, unfortunately.

I blame the media too. They carry Obama's water. They cover him on Benghazi. Journalism is dead.

IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT WHY YOUR PARTY LOST? EVEN PEOPLE AT FOX NEWS KNOWS YOU ARE DRINKING THE KOOL-AID THEY ALREADY THREW OUT.

I guess we lost because we don't realize the power of ALL CAPS INTERNET YELLING.

IF ROMNEY TRULY LOST BECAUSE OF THAT THEN HE HAD NO BUSINESS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

SEE HOW MUCH DUMBER YOU SOUND NOW?

    • jean2009

Actually I think what we learned last night is that the some of Teaparty have learned they and Citizens United can't buy an election using dirty politics....really lies and slander like a sitting American president is not a real American citizen, he,doesn't have a birth certificate, is a Muslim, is a socialist/communist, didn't earn his magna cum laude from Harvard...and on and on....the problem is that Faux media and its constant lie spinning machine didn't tell you the Kool AID was poisoned tea. .

After observing the Obama Campaigns full year of negative attack ads, spin an outright lies, you can honestly say all that about the Romney campaign with a straight face? pot, meet kettle.

Forward means that Obama has to get past people like McConnell who will continue to Block any attempts to move things forward. The first thing that needs to be done is getting rid of Grover Norquest. People like him have no damn business Hijacking Congressional people to sign his illegal TAX pledge! Who gave that clown the right to do it anyway, he is just a damn lobbyist!
    What an outrage.

MCCONNELL SOUNDS LIKE HE IS TOO WORRIED ABOUT HIS OWN ELECTION. TWO YEARS FROM NOW. HE'S GOING TO SOUND TOUGH FOR HIS PARTY SO THEY DON'T KICK HIM OUT IN FAVOR OF A TEA PARTY STOOGE. HIS IDEA OF GOVERNING IS 'FILIBUSTER' ANYTHING OBAMA ASKS.

scary – he still doesn't get it – it is not time for governing it is time for leadership. True leaders work to bridge differences & accomplish for the common benefit of all. Quit this mindset of I'm the boss & turn to I'm a leader! That is what America is demanding. Don't screw up

    November 7, 2012 at 5:39 pm |
    • DEcember 2012

UMM, GOVERNING IS A FUNCTION OF LEADERSHIP! THIS SHOULD BE TRUE OF ALL LEADERS, INCLUDING THE LEADERS IN CONGRESS! THEY SHOULD ALL GOVERN MORE AND BICKER LESS! IT'S WHAT 'GOVERN'MENT IS ALL ABOUT! JUST HOW CLUELESS ARE YOU?

      /SMH

      November 7, 2012 at 5:54 pm |
      • uncdig

Wrong answer. See the definition of governing a : to exercise continuous sovereign authority over; especially : to control and direct the making and administration of policy in
b : to rule without sovereign power and usually without having the authority to determine basic policy
this is what happened the last 4 years. We need leadership! Leadership is the capacity to lead not rule.

YOUR DEFINITION OF GOVERNING IS JUST ABOUT AS RELEVANT AS YOUR TWILIGHT ZONE VIEWS OF THE WORLD. IT IS MIND BOGGLING BUT THEN AGAIN, WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF REPUBLITARDS?

GOVERNING IS A FUNCTION OF LEADERSHIP. THAT IS THE BASIS OF OUR COUNTRY'S GOVERNMENT BECAUSE WE ELECT OUR LEADERS TO GOVERN. IF YOU WANT TO STICK TO YOUR PITHY DEFINITIONS OF GOVERNING THEN INVITE YOU TO COME OVER TO JERSEY AND TELL OUR 'GOVERN'OR WHAT YOU THINK. HE WILL PROBABLY SIT ON YOU FOR BEING SO DUMB.

AND TO ILLUSTRATE JUST HOW STUPID YOU ARE, JERRY ACTUALLY AGREED WITH YOU.

If I were Romney, I would leave politics, get all the money he makes, and enjoy life. Travel more with his wife, lay back, put his legs up in the air and just retire. He is getting old and even though he has many years left, it doesn't mean his heart should be dealing with all these emotions. Specially this loss, I bet if he goes to the doctor he can find minor heart attacks.

Sometimes you don't feel small heart attacks. My grandfather's doctors would show him all the minor heart attacks he had while feeling them.

RETIRE ROMNEY!!!! TAKE A VACATION!!!!! ENJOY YOUR MONEY!!!!!!! It will only do you good!!! And more quality time with your wife is good! you spent all your life on politics, now its all about you and your family!! You raised your kids well, they are all successful. Romney did your part, and thats the important way to look at it.

Let Barack Obama, The President of the United States of America, run this country and bring this country FORWARD!

Will everyone's bitching and arguing and blaming EVER STOP??? Fight Fight Fight Argue Argue Argue. You should all be in congress. All this continual bitching gets exactly NOTHING DONE! You’re all doing exactly what has always been done. You’re ALL BLIND and IGNORANT ASSES. If you keep doing the same thing, you will keep getting the same results. Simple.
