Hostess cuts 18,500 jobs ... Medical giant Stryker cuts 1,170 jobs, citing ObamaCare ... Priority One is jobs ... isn't that what Mitt Romeny kept saying !!!

Nothing new about that. Private owners have been firing American workers and outsourcing their jobs. romney owns dunking donuts and probably had shares in Hostess. I read republican magnates said that if President Obama won re–election, they would not create a single job πŸ™ . "republican styled patriotism." Anyway, it is small businesses who hire most of the jobs. So today's news in Huffington Post that many small owners are warming up to President Obama is very good news πŸ™‚

        TO Tschrny Wolf
So will those small businesses who do most of the hiring "warm up" to Obama after the first of the year when he hits them with a tax hike, since Obama considers them "millionaires"?

        November 18, 2012 at 5:01 pm |

Annie, most small business don't make more than $250,000.00. You might want to see Fareed Zakaria's Sunday morning show today on CNN. Because what they discussed covered all of us, business of all sizes and the regular American taxpayer.
He had two guests on, one a former Bush Treasury Sec. and one a former Clinton Treasury Sec.. They talk about the tax-code, tax rates and tax reform in a way that made sense and sounds reasonable and did it in a way that they were in agreement with several great ideas. Our problems are fixable and this segment gave me great hope that we can overcome our disagreements and move forward with these ideas that help all Americans. The second part of the show was with Bill Gates and was very inspiring also. He is an amazing man. So, give it a read or pull it up on their video feed. It is worth seeing. I am as tired as everyone else of the fighting. This program put me in a better frame of mind and shows what can be done. It was an eye-opener and I welcome their perspective. Cheers.

My response to you is that Hostess was run not by Bain but by a company called Ripplewood that is run by a top Democratic donor, Tim Collins. So, Democrats once again are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Ripplewood is a private equity firm just like Bain. So, any shares owned are owned by Democrats who just put 18,500 people out of work. Take THAT, Obama and the Democrats. Hypocrites all.

Wrong advice...there are a whole lot of jobs in meeting the demands, of all the problems, that will created by climate change.

    November 16, 2012 at 6:12 pm |
    • Howard

Now that the middle Eastern countries want to deny the U.S. oil ... as a weapon ... we can question Obama's wisdom in banning the Keystone Pipeline, drilling in Anwr, and off shore. After all, when American commerce, and American drivers screech to a halt ... we can always turn to wind mills and solar panels for solace.

      November 17, 2012 at 12:32 pm |
      • jean2009

Currently we are producing more oil here in this country than we were 4 years ago, and the bulk of that production has been on private land, not public land. Plus, U.S. oil imports have hit a 20 year low, and 52 % of those imports come from North & South American not the Middle East. We are using more bio-fuels, and the mileage trends for new vehicles is higher..Wind and solar will cut that need of foreign oil even further....and the quicker the better. Really you are not making any sense. FYI climate change is not an artificial problem.

        November 18, 2012 at 11:59 am |
      • Howard

        @ jean2009

First of all ... bio fuels end up costing us big time ... our government is converting our military ships to bio fuels ... costing the American tax payers $24 a gallon ... bio fuels are also dramatically increasing the cost of our food. Any increase of U.S. oil production, is in spite of obama and EPA energy policies ... not because of them. Regarding solar panels ... most of them are produced in China ... thanks to our inability to compete ... due to obama's union cronies forcing salaries for worker to just show up ... you know, like obama did in the Senate ... or, like teachers, who get huge salaries, benefits, and pensions, just for showing up. It's called tenure ... and, it's another obama example of redistributing the wealth of the 50% who actually work and pay taxes.

PRESIDENT OBAMA CHANGED HIS INITIAL OPPOSITION AND NOW SIGNED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TRANSATLANTIC PIPE. HE JUST URGED THIS PAST WEEK TO ACCELERATE THE BUILDING OF THAT PIPE πŸ™‚

AS OF MUSLIM OIL WITHDRAWAL, I LEARNED FROM EXPERT ECONOMISTS AT THE WORLD BANK THAT THE MIDEAST WILL RUN OUT OF OIL BY 2026 OR LATER. SO POLITICAL POSTURING CANNOT HIDE THE REALITY. THE LEADERS THERE OR THE TERRORISTS WILL TRY TO EXTORT AS MUCH AS THEY CAN BEFORE THEY GO BROKE.

        TO: Tschrny Wolf
If that is true, that Obama signed on to the Keystone Pipeline, that is a good thing. And something I fully expected him to do AFTER the election, so he wouldn't make the environmentalists angry, thus possibly losing their vote.

        November 18, 2012 at 4:57 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Annie, Pres. Obama dropped his opposition to the pipeline long before the election, taking plenty of heat from his base. However, several states have opposed the pipeline in fear of it's possible pollution of our aquafer under the most productive food growing states that depend on ground water for irrigation and so there are environmental issues, and rightly so, to be heard. Especially, the fact that this summer produced a horrible drought with very little to no rain for farmers and ranchers to deal with. But, the southern most portion of the pipeline has already been started – again, long before the election. The company pushing for it has had some terrible spills already and tar sands unlike regular oil, is far more dirty and complicated to clean up. The company so far hasn't done a good job on cleaning up the spills that have already spilled into rivers and streams where the pipeline has crossed. The company was slow to respond and proved that they haven't a clue or a proper plan for accidents. You might check out some of the reports by citizen groups monitoring the cleanup in the states that the company has operated in. Keystone pipeline – google it. There are videos of the spills and the disgusting aftermath.
One other thing you must consider. This is a Canadian company that wants to pipe this oil to Louisana for refining and this oil will be put on the world market for sale. We may never even see it for sale in this country. Are we willing to take a chance an environmental disaster is possible, for very few long-term jobs?

        November 18, 2012 at 10:44 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Sorry, I meant to say the pipeline was going to Texas refineries.
It really pays to develop algae as a green alternate bio-fuel. Easy to grow, clean.

The army also converted from the horse cavalry, side-sabers, bayonets, trench warfare, atomic cannons, and a whole bunch of other outdated technology, and I bet you there was a cost for doing that with a future cost saving reason for doing so.

The Democrats practically ran on climate change in 2008, and now few bring it up? Why? Because they were losing that political war and they would rather talk about freevstuff for their voters.

    November 16, 2012 at 7:06 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

We talk about climate change a lot, Republicans have stopped listening to that conversation. Selective hearing. I wonder what Romney promised the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson and Karl Rove who all dumped boatloads of money into Romney's failed campaign? Bet he's kinda wanting to know what they want 'now' – I'm guessin' his hide.

      November 16, 2012 at 7:36 pm |
      • jean2009

For the Koch brothers it was years more of government subsidies and their continuing to not pay a dime in federal taxes. For Adelson it was subsidizing his casino operations, and maybe keeping him out of the slammer for money laundering for the Chinese mob.

For any topic 307,000,000 "Media" articles produced during one year is not only a Media HOT topic, it is a raging inferno. Now, figure how many "media" articles a day that amounts to? Yes they are December. What else are they about. Coal and oil are much more economical, but the Obama EPA alliance can't have that.

    November 17, 2012 at 9:23 pm |
    • jean2009

Clean coal is an oxymoron...why persist on doing anything the dirty way when providing clean energy can be done right, done clean and healthy...going any other route sounds foolish to say the least. I'm sure it was more economical and took less time for doctors not to sterilize their surgical equipment...but oh the death rate!

      November 18, 2012 at 12:38 pm |
    • Tschrny Wolf

WAIT A SECOND, you republicans complain the cost of oil is too high, but now YOU SAY OIL IS CHEAP? HAHAHAHA, WHY DONT YOU MAKE UP YOUR MIND?

Natural gas may be costlier than coal, however, it is safer for drivers and pedestrians. Also it would de-pollute our environment; less people would die from pollution, the jobs in coal mining would go to natural gas workers. So the difference is fair. Less kids would die from pulmonary disease and pneumonia. Of course the companies that manufacture cough and cold remedies would loose revenues and go broke. Is that what romney defended? Yes, I think so.

      November 18, 2012 at 4:23 pm |
      • Jonny

probably close to 50% of natural gas comes from sour gas which is full of h2s toxic to life. This has to be extracted and compressed and put back underground you make it sound like it is all sunshine and lollipops, i do support nat gas as i am an energy worker in canada but there is a price for everything and nat gas has its own price.Probably just as dangerous as coal to extract and produce and as the news showed today handled improperly deadly huge explosions result.

        November 24, 2012 at 2:36 pm |
    • Tschrny Wolf

Dan B: the coal and fuel you mention cost our economy, workers and all Americans, both drivers and pedestrians, trillions of dollars in private insurance costs, worse in lost lives and maimed people that careless drivers run over. So President Obama's plan will pay for itself in dollars and most importantly in lives saved and lower or no insurance fees πŸ™‚ Right now the folks who go against Obamacare underestimate the price of the old dirty and polluting coal and gasoline. Concerning workers fired by the old polluter magnates, can find work in the new natural clean gas program our President has organized πŸ™‚ Would you prefer you and your family burn alive in a car explosion caused by dirty coal and fuel; than safely survive in a clean coal and gas vehicle; even for a few more dollars? Plus your youths will be safer since buying cars would be more expensive; that would keep them at home more. Teens can date online and they can save the money to pay for college /university πŸ™‚

      Think about it.

Look' a world run by solar power would be great, economical ,and green, but it is nonexistent and impractical. This world cannot run on green energy alone. And oil is too high for oil, not comparing it to other things. I am saying "For a laptop, this is expensive compared to what these laptops used to cost" and you are saying "this laptop is expensive"

Rizhao a city of 3 million people in Northern China is already building a city that will be run on solar power. they have been at it for the last 15 years... so the technology is not that new. Actually solar energy technology has been around since the 7th century B.C when man learned to use it to start fires.

For the love of heaven get a clue, do some research, read a book, and turn off the Faux spin machine. Solar and wind energy is going to happen with or without you, and it will provide a lot of jobs that require skilled labor.

You know what, If your president wants to focus on climate change in the face of an Israeli military strike and fiscal cliff fine, but don't try to convince me that it is the biggest issue. Look, I believe in climate change, but how much of it is natural? It was warmer than it is now in the Middle Ages, yet much colder in the 1700's, no machines or oil then unless you include whale oil. Climate change without human environmental abuse as you would all it.

    November 20, 2012 at 4:30 pm |
    • jean2009

Dan if you believe in climate change then the point is regardless of whether the change is due to a cyclic change, or a man made one, we still had better address it. Currently every indication points that for a great part this time it is a problem that is being acerbated by man, and the earth has far too many human inhabitants to ignore it. Sustaining humanity, animal and plant life in all likelihood should outweigh manageable things like the fiscal cliffs, and the Israel/Hamas continual idiocy.

I'm also sure OUR very capable president can work on more than one thing at a time.

He's already been in office four years and the negative impact has already been put in motion. The next four will cause great damage to this country. The issues he ran on and that many Americans were manipulated by were manufactured – amd he and his administration are very consciously aware of this – he has a bigger agenda. There is no war on women – women are doing great. Poor people don't envy wealthy people. People who are wealthy earned their wealth. This country has opportunity for us all. He will limit these freedoms and opportunities and turn this country into a European socialist style model – which has the worst healthcare in the world, and has limited freedoms in their daily lives. He promised this on his election night in 2008. Many of us knew from then what he was about – and we don't want it for America. He is a master manipulator – he doesn't care about unifying Americans, in fact, he has succeeded in dividing us. He is not worthy to be in the office he holds.

AGAZINE published that romney and his wife ann, dodged taxes by escaping to Switzerland "for skiing"; however in 2010 romney revealed that his wife had a swiss bank account for three million dollars in the swiss bank ,UBS, which did not charge due taxes and fees of American depositors. So full investigation caught the...violators and a 780 million settlement was bargained. The swiss bank wiped out the records clean. The writer wonders why if the romneys deposited millions in ubc , is that why romney refused to disclose his tax records for ten years? MMMMh, I wonder why his late disclosure papers were doctored (those news were revealed by reuters in early November, 2012. I dislike and disagree with your ideas tha all democratic pols act corruptedly. There are some bad apples in all carts; so supposed liberals like collins voted with the republicans πŸ™ he is a traiitor, no two ways about it. The American Society of Civil Engineers gave our grid a D+. Half a century of tax cuts for the wealthiest in our nation leaves us with third-rate public services. The World Economic Forum ranks American infastructure 25TH in the WORLD down from 8TH in 2003 – 4.
Repairing and upgrading our energy grid will create jobs and to leave it undone is a huge national security issue.

Actually the problem could be that foreign ownership of utility companies like the UK company National Grid which is the parent company which owns Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), hasn't put anything back into infrastructure for years. For our own safety and well-being as a country, public utilities should not be owned by foreign companies. All public utilities should be required by law to update their infrastructure and holdings routinely on a regular basis...with strict penalties for not doing so..

To Dan B: I wonder. I believe the conservatives who got elected are more moderate, with a few exceptions like bohener, the speaker of the house. But the dissident group in the repub side of the house points the radical and centrist gop and independents is falling apart πŸ™‚ I think that may result in a temporary "compromise" , but since the basic moderate/independent values are rather centrist and liberal; while the radical evangelists, protestants are firmly conservative. Such a shaky foundation is due to fall apart in the next elections :). Ordinary Americans, Latins, etc. are realizing what is going on inside the gop and the tea party, and they dislike it πŸ™‚ That is why I think they voted against the gop nominees πŸ™‚ VIVA PRESIDENT OBAMA, YES YES YES! SI SI SI πŸ™‚ OUI, OUI, OUI πŸ™‚ VIVA PRESIDENT OBAMA :)) (HURRAY FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA, BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO πŸ™‚
LET'S ALL HELP PRESIDENT OBAMA ACHIEVE HIS PROJECTS. WRITE TO YOU CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVE IN BOTH CHAMBERS TO PASS OBAMA'S PROGRAMS. ENOUGH GOP SEMI-SLAVERY OF WHAT THE ELITES CALL "THE MIDDLE LOWER WORKING AND POOR CLASSES." PUT AN END TO DISCRIMINATION, COVERED BY FALSE RACIAL EQUALITY THAT MAKE SURE A COLORED CANDIDATE DOES NOT GET THE NOMINATION.!!! I'm no tea party conservative, and sometimes I do wish the tea party was more temporary. The tea party was very helpful in 2010, but I don't know. One reason the Repubs do so much better in the midterms is voter turnout. Much of the Democrat's base like young people who are likely to turn out in a presidential election won't vote in a midterm, where as the elderly, a Repub stronghold, always stick around to vote. But I do think the tea party divides my party, since I am an establishment Republican. However, with all of the problems that my party has, the Democrats need to focus on the white vote. If Republicans can elect a Latino for president and they can oersuade the already socially conservative Latino base then the Democrats are in trouble. Don't forget, even though Rombey lost he got the highest percentage of white voters since Reagan's landslide victory in 1984

Let reagan finally die and rest in peace. The basic system the founders established was an unjust system, not a real free democracy for all AMERICANS AND IMMIGRANTS. THE ELITE has thrived in that unfair system. As the natural laws of evolution dictate, real change is unstoppable. See how disgruntled and paralyzed, I read here the leaders of the gop were when their nominees lost. Those nominees got 300 million in donations that failed to give them victory. You see, groups who blindly trust that their wealth can bribe all voters, or a majority are out of touch with reality πŸ™‚ I think romney knew that President Obama was the right choice for President. I guess you and romney were similarly confused. It is a relief your gop nominee is now old story, say bye-bye to him. You voted for a confused guy whose democratic origin was totally at war with his new mormon-tea party rigid and ruthless (the outsourcing of thousands of jobs πŸ™ radical conservatism. You sound ambivalent.. Like you are trying to hold on to a ruthless party you disagree with. Well I hope you return to the DNC, or to the Independent Party. The moderates have several good ideas πŸ™‚ Happy Thanksgiving.

Gonna focus like a laser on jobs again?
Wouldn't this be like the fifteenth time?
A batting average that is as bad as Obama's is usually described as incompetent.
But then an incompetent news media can't grasp their own responsibility let alone be able to view Obama's performance critically.

Well, we all know the types of jobs he will create. Let me give you a list. Retail associates (temporary of course, don't even dream about a permanent job with Barack in the WH) making minimum wage and ridiculous hours until you get fired after about two months; gas station helpers so you can have that wonderful smell of fuel impregnated in your skill making minimum wage, obviously; waiters and waitresses making minimum wage, of course, and tolerating all the crazy demands of patrons and, of course, you will be fired in about two months; beggar; strippers for those wonderful women that voted for him; and other similar high paying jobs. This is the future of America. For those engineers, accountants, scientists, economists, etc. well you folks belong to the unemployment line or emigrate (after all we don't want you in Obamaland).

Cynthia L The company is trans canada pipelines and they have not had a big spill, that was enbridge pipelines and it was def a mess, The oil from the oil sands is not any different than any other oil, new extraction methods use no fresh water, no tailings ponds, as of a month ago new methods are now in place where tailings ponds can be reclaimed within about 6 months instead of decades. Would you prefer to continue to support blood oil paying money to tyrants and terrorists or ethical canadian oil. Where workers are paid decent liveable wages for a product you use and need. Never have understood why you would rather finance an enemy than buy oil from canada.

It's been reported that there are 3.6 million job openings. Many are in fields that require a Math or Science Degree. It doesn't pay to cut education if there are that many jobs in fields where they need those type of people, does it?

Jerry, you miss it sir, President Obama and under his governing hired 5 million people, plus he gave 30 millions to small businesses which were going bankrupt because of the bush jr. recession. You see the workers bush and romney fired and the their outsourced jobs were not occupied by invisible angels!.

Jerry: when President Obama focused on the environment, romney shouted to pay the deficit, but after the christian gop approved romney'macho fiscal agenda of money first, jobs last game, months later romney faked into a jobs first champion, what the hell did he intend to do?
Fortunately enough voters realized there was no firm identity in romney, so they could not trust him πŸ™‚
I just read an article that Rolling Stone Magazine published.
It says that in 2010, romney revealed that his wife had deposited three million dollars in UBS, a swiss bank that charged no taxes, nor fees from American depositors. Yet, the swiss authorities found out and sued that bank. A deal was made, the depositors, many of them congresspeople , paid 780 millions in restitution. The UBS cleaned their records in exchange. The author wonders if that made romney refuse to show his tax records for 15 years. Included are romney's 2009 tax records.I find it puzzling our IRS has not digged into the matter, the federal board did not its job either. George bush owned 150 thousand dollars when he ran. Now he owns 150 MILLION DOLLARS! I found this source in the Huffington Post internet web.gee whiz, those who voted for the gop, do not know the ruin they would have led to.
