Obama visits 'middle class' family in latest fiscal cliff gambit

(CNN) – In one of the White House’s more elaborate photo-ops surrounding the ongoing fiscal cliff standoff, President Obama Thursday ventured nine miles west of Washington, D.C., to sit down with what his aides described as a “middle class family” in Falls Church, Virginia.

“For them to be burdened unnecessarily because Democrats and Republicans aren’t coming together to solve this problem gives you a sense of the costs involved in very personal terms,” the president told reporters flanked by members of the Santana family in their living room.

“Obviously it would also have impact on the economy because if this family has $2,000 less to spend that translates to $200 billion less in consumer spending next year,” Obama added.

The White House said Tiffany Santana, a high school English teacher, was among those who engaged in the #My2K social media campaign – the effort launched by the White House last week to encourage Americans to write in with stories on how an increase in taxes would affect their lives.

According to the White House, Santana explained her family household includes her husband, 6-year old son, and her parents. Because her parents are also middle-income wage earners, the entire household would see their tax bill go up by $4,000 if the Congress does not act, Santana said.

“The message that I got from Tiffany and the message that I think we all want to send to members of Congress is this is a solvable problem,” Obama also said.

Ahead of the visit, the White House also released a slickly-produced video of the family – reminiscent of a campaign commercial - in which they detailed their monthly expenses and explained why they supported the president’s position. Meanwhile, an Obama/Biden yard sign was spotted still gracing their lawn.

The living room sit-down constituted the president’s latest effort to take his case on the fiscal cliff debate to the American people directly. Earlier this week he spoke to workers at a toy-manufacturing plant outside Philadelphia. He’s set to make a similar speech in Detroit next week.

Still campaigning. I guess we can assume that he'll continue campaigning throughout his 2nd term and into his 3rd term, once he declares by Executive Order that term limits are not fair.

Biggest joke the devil ever played on humanity was convincing half of America that this man tells the truth and will better our lives.

Listen to you. Your country is going down the toilet and you act like spoiled little schoolboys. The Chinese don't have a fiscal cliff, bubba. The Russians don't have a fiscal cliff, you idiots. It is a device of your own making. The world is looking at you losers and saying, "This is the leader of the free world? What a bunch of kooks!"
You elected a president. Get over it. Move on, stupid. Deal with the problems you really DO have instead of making up boogey men to fill your closet so you can hide under the covers. Wake up, children.

President Obama is speaking to the average American worker and their families, because the "do nothing" Congress is not listening to anyone but the very, very wealthy. The Republicans have done nothing substantial to support the middle-lower classes for over 70 years. Talking to them is useless, so the president, wisely, takes it directly to the people. The Democrats have outproduced the Republicans in growth and jobs, spent less and had less debt, for more than half a century. The "joke", being played on humanity, is that the Republicans do anything for the average American and , in spite of documentable historical evidence to the contrary, are able to get ignorant people to go along with them.

Obama wants the most successful members of society to pay more in taxes, while allow half of our nation to pay nothing and receive more. That is an insane concept. Let's get real tax reform by eliminating loopholes for the wealthy and capping refunds at what an individual has paid in during the year. Unfortunately, tax day has become another unfunded entitlement with many paying an effective tax rate of -100 to -1000%. It is time to sink or swim, stop floating on the talents of others. Entitlement programs exist to help those who can't help themselves. Unfortunately, they have become a permanent source of income for many who don't want to help themselves!

Jean, the 2000 election in Florida had 1 count and 2 recounts. You also forget that the state was announced by the media even before the polls closed. The panhandle is in a different time zone. People standing in line started to go home after hearing the news. The panhandle is also a more conservative region. Yet, no one mentions that their votes didn't count. As many of the Democrats would say. You lost, get over it. Works both ways.

Yeah, I remember when the nuts on the left were saying that about Bush, now the nuts on the right are saying it about Obama. That rightwing fear machine is starting to take it's toll i guess.

Look DC, there is no evidence this is even a concern, and in fact – most of the things you likely fear about Obama are unfounded as well (just like they were for Bush). Go outside, take a breath and try to find some objective information.

Let me put it to you this way DC; even if Obama DID try to have a 3rd term, it wouldn't happen. The libs as well as the righties would be at the whitehouse gates with torches. You would see the most united populace this country has had in a long time. You have nothing to worry about, and your fears are unfounded, irrational and make you look crazy. At least think these things through.

        @ Tommy,

We are doomed as long as we continue to allow our politics to be about hostage taking. The president is advocating a 100% tax cut for the 1st $250K that ALL AMERICANS make. I need that tax cut because only the amount over $250K per year do I have to pay extra. I don't make that much to worry about it.

Lionel – Being he said he is in the middle class, I imagine TommytheT worked hard, lived within his means or below in order to have enough money to retire without having to accept help along the way. I think this country would do much better if the government started being more responsible with taxpayers money, therefore, there would be no need to keep taxing everyone to death. And if you are paying more taxes than "rich people", you should see an accountant to see what you're doing wrong on your tax returns.

        December 7, 2012 at 11:05 pm |
      • fiscal2020

@annie then TommytheT has nothing to worry about, because Obama has always said if you MAKE > $250k he will tax you more, not if you HAVE $250k. If you are making > $250k / year you are not the "save every penny live within your means" type of person that you are talking about; you are rich. The exception is if you make all your money from dividends and the stock market - then he will tax you more. If that's what you do then technically you do not contribute anything to the economy other than money and moving money around, and if taxes have to go up those are exactly the type of people to tax, not the person who puts in physical work. The economy grows when people put in actual work, not when they sit in front of a computer watching their stocks go up.

While I agree with you the 3 day break is ridiculous especially now, if you recall the GOP won elections too! Especially in the House! I will give you one better...watch and see if this comes true. Can I suggest that Mr Obama will soon instruct his justice department to issue an opinion on whether he needs congress's approval to raise the debt limit. They we say no he does not, so as he has stated many times, he will not play the game and will not wait to act and will raise the limit. He will be challenged in court but the process will be slow, (like F&F) and by the time it gets to the SC, it will be years, he will have spent what he wanted and he will look toward a favorable court to let him go.

        December 7, 2012 at 4:53 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

TommyT – It is NOT in the Constitution that Congress shall decide the Debt Ceiling. So, pretty much, the law could very well support the President in this regard.

        December 8, 2012 at 3:30 am |
      • Cynthia L.

It is my understanding that the law may well support Obama's position on the Debt Ceiling as the Constitution does not specify that Congress has the power to determine it.

        December 8, 2012 at 4:07 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

TommyT – I believe our Constitution does NOT require that the Congress be the entity that determines the Debt Ceiling. Pres. Obama just may have the law on his side.

        December 8, 2012 at 8:01 pm |
      • Steveo

I certainly hope not! If that happens I would hope the SC takes up that challenge right away! In addition, the Congress should call in the AG and impeach immediately, should any such opinion is issued!.

I wonder how much this three wage earning family (living in what appears to be a decent house) pays in federal taxes? I'm guessing zero. What a ridiculous and self serving photo-op and story.

Common sense? I don't think so. The words you just used describe Bush. Our country had a budget surplus thanks to Clinton – the other great, great president we have had in our time. Bush, Cheney and Rove lied and screwed the american people. That's what got us into this mess. They should all have been charged with treason. And you need to get an education – it's obvious that you haven't had one.

The losers are the American people because they will have to pay more in taxes. Both the Dems and Repubs are irresponsible. They make enough money so the tax increases will not hurt their budgets. If they would stop all these "pork" projects I would not mind paying more in taxes. I have worked for 45 years in the private sector and I am on a fixed income.

        Yo Decemeber ,

I realize the focus here is on federal taxes but the reality is state and local taxes stil have to be paid and are going up too. I just received my tax bill for my home and the tax assessment rate is $20K higher than assessed value. Like I said , I underdstand the focus is federal taxes but the same wallets and purses that opens for the feds are the same wallets and purses that opens at the state and local level. You live in Jersey and I know you know exactly what I am talking about. Gas taxes, sales taxes, vehicle taxes. It all adds up. Just tossing out something else to discuss.

Why do you make it sound like Dems don't do the same? Federal taxes come from people who live in states that have Dem and GOP leadership. Getting some of that back for local projects IS expected! You think there is no need to cut spending? I beg to differ with you! There has to be balance and cutting spending is apart of that balance! Savings from cuts can go and paid down the debt. If we take in $2T a year, we cannot keep spending $3T!

Think about it this way...the Iraq and Afghan wars are projected to cost us $4.4 Trillion, that does not include the cost of Libya, or the World Wide cost for the War on Terror estimated at few trillion, or the future cost for caring for those wounded by those wars, then add the $1 Trillion annual defense budget for hardware, staff, personnel, etc. Then look at the Federal Deficit, and it is no mystery as to why it stands at $16 Trillion.

I ask you what other civilized country spends that much on war, and then whines about spending $64 billion to educate its citizens, and whines about the cost for keeping its citizens healthy, and for the least fortunate not too well feed?

i would say the biggest cuts should start with that bloated military budget, and by first not spending money on things like tanks the military doesn't even want. Regardless of whose district the factory for those tanks is located near.

What self serving photo-op and story. I'm guessing this family pays zero federal income tax and stands squarely behind Obama in calling for increased taxes on the "wealthy". Hmm, those on the public dole who are paying no federal taxes voted Obama back into office and now want to benefit from his "gifts" and help him realize his redistribution of wealth dream. I am shocked....

Fema teams told to sight see as sandy victims suffered
“The regional coordinator even said to us, ‘I don’t know why you were rushed here because we don’t need you,'” said the worker, who spoke out of frustration with the lack of planning and coordination following the devastating storm.

'I worked in Katrina and Katrina was run better than Sandy.'

    – Anonymous FEMA first responder

After arriving in New Jersey, the worker and others waited for three full days and parts of another, even as reports dominated the television of the devastation and suffering wrought by the storm, which struck land on Oct. 29. When they asked for assignments, they couldn't believe the response, according to the worker.

“They told us to go to the Walmart nearby or to check out the area but told us to stay out of the areas affected by the storm,” the worker said. "If our boss back at headquarters had not been alerted and didn’t make a push to get us assignments, the people running the show on the ground level would have just kept us sitting in the barracks.”

Everybody now lets just stop blaming whos the cause of what. Obama won thats it, NOW we have to get our jobs and economy straightened out. In all honesty it even shows in the usa today for today that there is MORE jobs going overseas than before. We are losing control of our jobs and money ppl, who here can see that? In my perspective i have just lost my raise and my christmas bonus total to be 1,200.00 for one year. I make 30k a year because i work 70 hrs a week and have one day off and thats my sundays. Its because of the raising taxes on ppl who make more than 250k and that hurts my job because we are taxed enough as it is. And now the mandatory insurance is awful i can't afford insurance i rather take the penalty. But we need to seriously sit down and talk about this. In all honesty i do believe we need to reform everything taxes, health, issurance, i even think we need to raise the income level that qualifies for poverty now in days 1,200.00 is the most for you to qualify for food stamps and etc.

What a crock. Listen, Obamacare doesn't kick in until 2014. The Republicans made sure of that. So, if your premiums went up on your insurance it's because the insurance company is on the take, squeezing you and others for as long as they have and continue to do until then – TAKE IT UP WITH YOUR POLICY HOLDER.
The only things in effect right now that you may be grateful for – Insurance companies cannot deny you coverage for pre-existing conditions – have to cover your children through age 26 – cannot set ceilings on your treatments – MUST USE AT LEAST 80% of the premium you pay TO YOUR CARE otherwise THEY MUST REFUND THE DIFFERENCE IN MONEY TO YOU.

I'll start y saying I don't like this president. Now let’s talk about our problem. We will all be hit by a 2K increase in taxes next year if these jack bags in Washington (Or Hawaii if you the president on vacation) don’t do something. The republicans have agreed to the original request of the President of an 800 billion dollar tax increase, they don’t degree on how to get there (so what new). But there is nothing from the pres on spending cuts. We are 16 trillion in debt, I estimate our interest on that debt at 5 % is 800 billion. The increased tax revenue gets us no where we need to slash spending – across the board.

However, can you please please quit the campaigning and meeting with moms from Idaho. Instead, please find a very nice conference room and get John Boehner over. Bring in some cheese and crackers, wine, whatever. And work out a deal – sounds like Republicans are gonna give up some taxes, now its our turn to give. Maybe some benefits, raise the retirement age – be smart, but yes its gonna hurt middle class people like me. I am sure we can still watch the game. Best of luck. Once we are done, maybe we can get back to solving some really important issues that I know we both care about, like the environment, education and fixing a few of the things in the health care that just aren't quite right. Also please get rid of the med device tax as that is hurting my industry.

Having been one of those people who has been through the medical system over the last few years with an ill husband. I find medical devices and their cost a rip off that is very overpriced....it is ridiculous that a handicap chair costs Medicare and the secondary insurer the price of a new car. Or, that a 1 inch 10 ft nylon strap for a hoist cost $381.66 to replace.

I hope the tax stays in place....and the manufacturers quit ripping off the American people, and Medicare.

There is a whole lot of greed in the medical device field.

Obama meets with middle class & then jets off to Hawaii for a 2 month vacation while while driving America off the fiscal cliff – yeah he really relates to middle class

    December 7, 2012 at 5:36 pm |

Thank you! How about spending 2 months LIVING like the middle class! We don't have a revenue problem we have a spending problem. I don't spend too much and ask my boss for a raise, I cut back on spending... This is NOT rocket science!

Like all previous Presidents they a working holiday , they have advisors near by to them up to date and secure communictions centre to kepp in touch with the WH. Pres Obama hasnt taken a 2 month holiday anytime during his term , most of them have been up to a week or so and in first 3 years he took 78 days of working vacation time ( more than happy if you can give an updated figure for his final year so far I will be more than happy) . Maybe you are thinking Pres G W Bush 879 days on working holidays at his Crawford hobby farm and 477 days at Camp David for a total of 1356 days away from the WH thats around 45% of his 8 years , and that doesnt count campaigning fundrasing trips.

What planet are you from? On this planet 20 days is not two months. Besides we were already at the bottom of the ravine when Obama took office....it was George W. Bush who drove the Train of State off the cliff.

        Sorry Jean, I couldn't resist.

"we were already at the bottom of the ravine when Obama took office." Therefore, any action would have led to improvement no matter who was in office. When you are at the bottom, there is no place to go but up.

20 days, a month are close enough. I don't get a 20 day vacation. Maybe if he was talking to Congress and not out campaigning he could accomplish something.

    December 8, 2012 at 12:05 pm |
    • geggyg

If thats how you do maths ( 20 days almost equals 30 or 31 days) I would hate to be a business man supplying goods to you ,if I gave you a bill for $30 would you just give me $20 and then say oh well thats close enough to $30.
But back to your comment on hoidays , its adsurd that you and many american workers dont get over 3 weeks holidays a year . Do you live at your work site , or on call 24 hours a day wherever you are in the US or the world , Any leader of a country deserve al 20 days a year on vacation (working vacation ) remember Pres GW Bush was on working vacations at Camp David or his Crawford hobby farm for over 1300 days , over 150 days a year, so Pres Obama is doing pretty good at only having between 20-30 working vacation days a year so far .

  50. fiscal2020

Also annie I can very easily find you many rich individuals who pays less taxes because they get all his money through dividends and capital gains than a high income middle class person. You do not even have to talk about rich. A person trading stocks and making 100k / year should not pay less in taxes than an engineer making 80-100k. The tax system is clearly rigged not only for the rich but for people with a certain type of lifestyle who contribute nothing to the economy other than move money from place to place.

And not everyone can afford high priced accountants who deduct everything known to man. Even Republicans agree the tax code has to be simplified and some deductions have to disappear, because they are fundamentally unfair. Deductions also favor the wealthy.

How much did Romney earn in the last 4 years , and he supposedly cared too. Thats right he didnt earn anything since he stepped down as Gov , in his own words he was unemployed ( did he get the unemployment benefit and food stamps ) but he was a nice father and supported his sons after they resigned from good paying jobs ( isnt that being lazy and irresponsible ) to volunteer on his campaign fulltime while unemployed . Arent the unemployed supposed to spend everyday looking for work.

My point was it is a long vacation. The number doesn't matter. If you are an Obama supporter, gegygg, you don't understand basic math because your leader doesn't and smart businessman don't follow stupid ones.

    December 8, 2012 at 8:40 pm |
    • geggyg

So the Bear Stearns Bank and other financial institutions( they supported Bush in 2 elections) were run by smart business men who understood basic maths how much did they lose???? , or in the new repub reality were they bankrupted by the unions.
I just love it when the inconsistencies in the anti Obama arguements, are pointed out suddenly numbers and facts dont matter , notice you didnt say if Bushs holidays were too long , or is 150 days a year shorter than 30 days a year for Obama. Or is that anything that happened before 2009 shouldnt be mentioned , repubs are so modern they dont even want to remember the past.

He is still campaigning because republicans are still in denial and need some reassurance that it is okay to move forward. He should just walk into Congress and tell them what needs to get done and if they don't, then I'm pretty sure he won't get blamed for inaction but the Congress, who has unbelievably low approval ratings, will be blamed. Boehner and the GOP just look like obstructionist at this point. Man up or shut up and get out of the president's way.

Are you kidding? Get out of his way? How can you get IN his way when he's nowhere to be found in Washington DC! The guy refuses to actually do any work, but rather continue to preach his rhetoric. When are we going to see action from Obama rather than photo ops? We get it Barry, Repubs are bad, and raising the taxes on the >$250k crowd will answer all of our prayers and keep you from setting another record deficit spending record....Now, why don't you actually GET TO WORK rather than pose for cameras and GET THE JOB DONE ALREADY?????

OK, seriously, put the political party favoritism aside for a moment...shouldn't we ALL be annoyed with the fact that while we're on the cusp of major tax increases and such that our President would rather campaign than take part in negotiations? This is when we need a leader, and running campaign-style business isn't helping one bit. TIME TO GET TO WORK OBAMA! Stop campaigning please and do your job!

    December 9, 2012 at 8:33 pm |

You could begin with the Republican Governors, like Rick Scott in Florida, for chasing away voters who were not only supporters of Dems BUT OF REPUBS in their attempt at VOTER SUPPRESSION. I think Democrats might have picked up a few unexpected voters in the next elections. Oh, the cost of dumping on Democracy's best invention – THE VOTE.

Will he explain to them why he insists on flooding the U.S. job market thru legal and illegal immigration, despite the obvious harm this causes to 99% of American workers? That's how it is, though, when you win an election with massive support from the Mexian gov't and it's well organized expatriate community living in the U.S.

Give me a break!!!

Austerity is possible coupled with the increase in taxes for those making over $250,000 but it will take all of Congress to work together and allow it to run it's course.

The problems didn't come over night and they can't be fixed over night.

Everyone across the board, rich and poor, need to make sacrifices to help get this country back to where it should be. The politicians need to do their job and make sure it gets done.
