Wednesday at the White House

President Obama has a light public schedule today with only one event- a screening of the new NBC show 1600 Penn and that is closed to cameras. He'll have plenty of time to discuss upcoming cabinet nominations  and we'll keep our eyes and ears opened for any possible announcements. The main focus at the White House today is Vice President Biden's meeting with victims of gun violence and gun safety organizations as part of his working group on the issue of gun control, as assigned by the president. Tomorrow's meeting includes a sit-down with representatives from the NRA and the National Sport Shooting Foundation. We'll keep an eye out in case anyone comes to the stakeout to talk about the meeting.

Here is the president's schedule, as released by the White House:

10:00AM THE PRESIDENT and THE VICE PRESIDENT receive the Presidential Daily Briefing

Oval Office (Closed Press)

12:30PM THE PRESIDENT and THE VICE PRESIDENT meet for lunch

Private Dining Room (Closed Press)

4:45PM THE PRESIDENT hosts cast and crew members of the television show 1600 Penn for a screening at the White House

The Family Theatre (Closed Press)

From the previews I saw of 1600 Penn it doesn't seem like that funny of a sitcom.

Think about it ... are we facing legislation by decree??? what next will fall to executive orders??? Amendment 1 perhaps????

    January 10, 2013 at 8:17 pm |

If Obama wants change the way we look at an gun laws using executive order then there is no telling what he can do to the other amendments. If he went through Congress, then this would be a different conversation, but as Joe Biden hinted he likely won't.

The vast majority of funds – 74% – contributed to the NRA are from 'corporate partners' who are members of the firearm industry who are involved in the manufacture or sale of firearms and shooting related products. THAT WOULD BE 74%. The majority of the public who favor the 2nd amendment also CONDEMN military-style weapons with large clip magazines. So, Marie, you think a cop in every corner, under every desk, behind every tree, is a solution to the shooting of children in school?? Because this is what the NRA thinks should happen while of course, helping their corporate partner members (you know, the 74%) get rich.
General McCrystal came forward with his concern that high-powered military style weapons that are used in war have no place in our communilties.
It was reported that the shooter at the Aurora movie theater shot 29 times in 30 seconds. It was reported that the SIX-YEAR-OLD children of the Sandy Hook Elementary School were shot several times each, with one child being shot 11 times. Children who were so badly shot up that it took hours to identify them.
I have been a part of the hunting culture through my family. The hunting of people was NOT on the agenda. Military-style weapons are mass people-killing machines. I support our President's efforts to end the abuse of these types of weapons. The NRA was NOT ELECTED by the people of this country to set policy. In fact, their PR campaign to you didn't even result in any real electoral success for favored candidates. They have you willing to do their dirty work though.
Nobody is saying we have to give up our second amendment rights – BUT we do have a right to life of which those in the movie theaters and schools will not ever get to have. EVER – not because of war but of war being waged nontheless on our humanity.
Time to go to the mall, Marie??

        January 11, 2013 at 11:10 am |
      • Marie

Cynthia, I'm not backing assault weapons and I certainly would never own one, but this is a big piece of legislation and should go through the Congress as the Congress was put there to do. This forces compromise, which you have stated you like right? If Obama uses executive order, then he can ban what he wants and regulate what he wants without any concensus from anyone else. Biden only brought the NRA in as a show.
