Wednesday at the White House: Obama talks about gun violence

Thursday is the much-anticipated event where President Obama will lay out "concrete" proposals on how to curb gun violence and protect children from future attacks such as what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School just a month ago. Vice President Biden has been focused on the issue with his working group for the last few weeks and presented his recommendations to the president earlier this week. President Obama and Vice President Biden will be joined at the events with children who wrote letters to the president following the Newtown massacre.

Guidance, as released by the White House:

10:00AM THE PRESIDENT and THE VICE PRESIDENT receive the Presidential Daily Briefing

Oval Office (Closed Press)

11:55AM THE PRESIDENT and THE VICE PRESIDENT hold an event at the White House to unveil a package of proposals to reduce gun violence

South Court Auditorium (Open Press)

These knee jerk reactions are for political theatre only and to surround himself by children while doing it is disgusting.........

Obama should also suround himself with the 1.4 millon aborted children when he supports abortion rights.

And some people think taking your kid to a firing range, or buy them a video game to shoot at human shape targets is beyond believable, too.

Not sure what your point is........as my dad did with me and his dad with him and so on, we teach our kids about guns and gun safety at a young age. My boy been shooting since he was five. He is now nine and on a precision shooting team, both air and small bore .22. And just last summer starting shooting sporting clays with me. My point is, he is well educated on firearms, respects them and could give two flips about them when we are not out shooting.........same goes for my daughter........sure if I said I let him shoot my AR , your heads would explode, so I'm not going to say it.........

My father grew up in poverty and was a pheasant/rabbit/squirrel hunter and I was taught about that, too. Gun safety was always first. My point was human-shaped targets at ranges and in video games. There is something very creepy about trying to desensitize the killing of a person when teaching a child about guns.
I also have misgivings of guns in everyday entertainment shown on TV and in movies and I challenge those who probably don't have real imaginations to begin with to write, produce and show the public another side to storytelling.
Sly Stallone has a movie out called "Bullet To The Head". A glorified revenge movie. Please, stop and think about how what you put out in the world is NOT LOST to the wind. And, please, don't let your children see overtly violent entertainment (if you can call that entertainment).

YOU HAVE A POINT. HINDSIGHT IS BAD. KEEP INFORMED ON CURRENT EVENTS AND SEE WHO IS THE GOOD GUY
AND WHO JUST MIGHT RIP OUT YOUR HEART AND DESTROYED ALL THE GOOD THINGS OF GOD AND COUNTRY
THAT YOU MAY OR NOT HAVE HAD THE BLESSING TO ENJOY. SOME OF US HAD A LOVING FAMILY TO DIERECT

What's disgusting is that people are enabling these random massacres by pretending like there is an inalienable Constitutional right to 100-round magazines and unregistered guns.. and a "freedom" to sell your guns to whomever you want, including criminals. Read the Second Amendment, it doesn't say unrestricted or unregulated by law, in the same way that the Fourth Amendment and First Amendment have always been limited in certain cases.

The proposed gun control is totally reasonable. It will prevent criminals from obtaining weapons by registering weapons so we know who to hold responsible when those weapons show up at the scene of a crime. Sorry, but people like you who are ardently defending the status quo, in my opinion, are either gun manufacturers with a vested interest in profit... or you're selling guns to felons and mentally unstable people who otherwise wouldn't have them.. or you're just emotional about something that should not be an emotional issue.

I can't believe so many people are refusing responsible gun ownership laws. This is ridiculous.

Where were all the gun control nuts when Obam was giving auto matic weapons to Mexico ??? You know the ones that got Agent Terry killed. Just curious, its ok for the pres to give auto assault riles to other countries to get our people killed ???

Ah yes, the good ol' days when Reagan started his covert Iran-Contra disaster. We as a nation have armed many others over many years, even the evil Saddam Hussien and the Taliban and look what good it does. No good at all, I'd say, in the long run. Alas, hindsight is 20-20.

As usual get off track, so it was ok for bam man to give weapons to the cartel????

        January 16, 2013 at 12:56 pm |
      • Caramon

Well Moose, in some respects Cynthia does make a good point. We did arm the Taliban in Afghanistan to battle against the Soviet Union. It started under Carter and was continued under Reagan. Little did we know at the time that a faction of this group would become the biggest terrorist threat to the US.

However Cynthia, there is some difference when comparing Afghanistan to the Mexico. Had we armed Mexican police or soldiers to fight against the drug cartel then it would have greater similarity. On paper, it may have seemed a good idea. But it turned rotten nonetheless.

      • Cynthia L.

I was responding to our nation's actions as a whole and that includes this President and any future President. Fast and Furious was a misguided attempt to track illegal gun trafficing. The NRA has tried to have it all ways if it serves their funding partners. Gun sellers on the border whether at a gun shop or at gun shows have sought the protection from existing laws by being shielded by the NRA who also thinks having those on terrorist watch lists need 2nd Amendment protection and have lobbied to block the law enforcement agencies tasked to track them. What is your answer to that burning man??

ENFORCEMENT,MILITARY AND YES WE THE PEOPLE IN OUR OWN DEFENCE WE HAVE THE RIGHT ,BUT USE IT WISEY.

Okay, Nan,....I'll give you this one. It's pretty pathetic to think anyone would need even a 10 round clip for hunting and MOST are afraid to even try and hunt a bear. And, you are also right when you mentioned who should have and not have such hardcore firepower. Peace. On the streets, in your homes and in our schools. The sad news is that some have come home from conflicts overseas only to meet up with a bullet at home. We all can do better than this.

They are missing the point of the second amendment and thus missing the reason why we are pissed. The second amendment does not give us the right to hunt, nor does it give us the right shoot for sport, it specifically gives us the right to form a militia and draw arms against a tyrannical government. Taking away these weapons is a direct violation of that right and is nothing more but a power grab by this corrupt administration

At the end of World War II Hitler armed children to protect Germany as, that was just about all he had left. Africa is rife with child-soldiers. Children have a voice too and believe me, I've spoken to many who know about school shootings and have very solid opinions and fears of their own. If it takes children to change the world for the better, I'm all for it.

So then you must be ok with the NRA using Obama's kids to help make a point that all children should be as protected as the presidents kids?

        January 17, 2013 at 6:32 am |
      • Cynthia L.

Seriously, John, have you even read the proposals? Or, do you just side blindly with the NRA?
The present Administration proposed money for "Secure Our Schools" which was a policing grant that would provide funding to improve school safety that Congress NIXED out in 2012.
Yesterday the President asked Congress to approve money to hire back 15,000 police officers that have been laid off over economic concerns in different cities and make them available to schools who thought they were in need of them along with providing Counselors if that was what they needed instead.
Yes, I have a problem with the ad the NRA put out about the Presidents children because it is untrue and very slimey.

        January 17, 2013 at 12:14 pm |
      • John

Cynthia, I have read them. Have you? Do all of them make sense to you?
Several of these orders start with – "direct federal law enforcement" and "direct the department of justice" and "direct the department of health". Did you see that? So Obama is directing Obama to do these things?
I understand Obama has issued fewer executive orders than any other president. I do not have a problem with any president, including Obama, issuing orders. What I have a problem with are presidents who "do something" just to say they did something, but have no real impact on fixing anything.
I understand from your comments that you have no issue with a national data base of legal gun owners. How would you feel about a data base of all women that have had abortions? Is that OK with you? If not, why not? How would you feel if your doctor reported you to the federal government because your doctor thought you were a little "off"?

        January 18, 2013 at 2:02 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

No, John, he is directing the heads of those departments that serve under the President. It's the way our government is run. You did know that, right?.......Right??,.... You were pulling our legs,......right? The Commander-in-Chief is head-honcho of all those departments and no one else directs them but, the President. You know that,....right? You were just kiddin',...you kidder, you.....Right??

        January 18, 2013 at 10:46 pm |
    • Kool-Aid Police

I agree. The president can put forth whatever he wants and state his arguments for what he thinks needs to happen but using children for theater isn't a good idea, it looks completely staged and hollow. We'll find out in time if any of this works or not but I want to see more to curb the illegal gun owners, they commit most of the crime.

        January 16, 2013 at 2:02 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Obama is not taking away the 2nd Amendment. If you want to bring up a Bush, the first Pres. Bush used an Excecutive Order to ban assault weapons. The second Pres. Bush called for an assault weapons ban publically. They did not take our right to have guns away and neither is Obama. Mass killing machines with devasting firepower is beyond reasonable and the public has demanded action.

Sometimes you make some sense, just sometimes......but MASS KILLING MACHINES?? come on, really ? My 9mm and 45 can fire just as fast as my AR and only takes couple seconds to reload another mag...........His "controls" will fix nothing.......responsible, law abiding citizens you don't have to worry about, it's the crazies and the criminals.....I carry everywhere i'm allowed just in case I'm ever confronted by one of them........and my family appreciates it too.....

        January 16, 2013 at 2:56 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Well, the ugly truth about us being the most armed citizens in the world is that we also have the highest gun related deaths of any other nation. So, your keeping yourself safe with all those guns looks to be on the doubtful side just by the numbers alone. Are you a Survivalist extremist looking for a Black Hawk Helicopter to land on your lawn?
The President has not used Executive Order yet, to ban Assault Weapons and is calling on Congress to step up. He has however, stressed his intended actions on gun sales and the tracking of guns and the prosecution of those who lie on applications which totalled 10,000 last year with only 44 cases persued and prosecuted.
Caramon, just because you are a Conservative doesn't give you an edge on gun-rights and the 2nd Amendment. Most Americans agree with the 2nd Amendment but, want sensible action on keeping weapons out of the hands of those who intend harm to others and using them for criminal endeavors. No reason to keep that from happening.

A study reported in the SOUTHERN MEDICAL JOURNAL in 2010 found that a gun is 12 TIMES more likely to result in the death of a household member or guest than in the death of an intruder.
Public Health Specialist, David Hemenway, at Harvard says that having a gun at home increases the risk of suicide in that household by TWO to FOUR TIMES.
The President is ENDING a freeze on research into gun violence at the CENTERS for DISEASE CONTROL and PREVENTION – signing an order that doctors and other healthcare providers are not prohibited by any federal law from reporting patient's threats of violence.
The Presidents proposal WILL NOT LIMIT any law-abiding American's rights to own guns for hunting, sport, collection, or self-protection. His bills would require universal criminal background checks for ALL gun sales and Internet sales that have lead to the exemption of 40% of those checks being done by loopholes in existing laws.
If we could reduce gun deaths by one-quater it would add up to 7,500 lives saved a year.

Sorry jerry, Obama is under pressure to act from the majority who are sick of gun mass-murder as was the first Pres. Bush when he acted. I just hope a hothead like you doesn't own a gun. You seem a little off to me.

        January 16, 2013 at 2:36 pm |
      • Caramon

Well Cynthia, I approach the topic of gun regulations with mixed feelings. I am as much pro second amendment as most Conservatives. However, I remember a kid in our neighborhood many years ago. He was not mentally ill, but mentally slow with an IQ far bellow average. He tended to bounce from one job to the next. One time he was hired as a security officer, a rent a cop. Yes, he was trained and carried a sidearm. I believe this frightened many in the neighborhood. He should not have been allowed to carry a gun. So, I have to look at the gun issue with an open mind. It is a serious problem and needs real solutions.

      • steveo

        Caramon,

I am with you. Somehow, someway we have to take party politics out of this. Unfortunately we cannot. I don't think there is one soul up in DC capable of doing it either. The primary issue is mass killings, the primary culprits are hardened criminals and those with mental issues. Joe Citizen is not shooting up schools and theaters. The REAL question is how do we stop those with issues from gaining access? In the case of Newtown, the mother legally owned the weapons, she did not have mental issues, her son did. Knowing about her son, the weapons should have been locked up (if they were not). The easy and quick answer is a blanket policy! Even after today, there will be gun violence. There is NO law that will stop those with bad intentions, this MAY slow them a bit, but will not stop them! Lots of hurdles to jump over. Primarily (to me, Privacy in medical/mental issues). Are we getting to where a household with one person (a child, in example) with mental issues disqualifies the entire family from weapons? The issue is much deeper than automatic weapons! Somebody in DC is going to have to do some real soul searching! And as usual, half the country won't be happy! Although I did not vote for him, I would not want to be in the president's chair!

        January 16, 2013 at 3:30 pm |
      • Caramon

I just wonder Steveo if the mother had any idea that her son was capable of this violence. I know when I was growing up, I could never keep secrets from my parents. Somehow they always knew is something was not right.

        January 16, 2013 at 4:25 pm |
      • steveo

        Caramon,

No parent wants to believe their child is capable of such an act. Any level headed parent has that bias. Unfortunately, that bias proved very wrong in the Newtown case. Caramon, that brings up another issue. If a parent knows, what are he legal ramifications, if the child is an adult? Too little answers, too many questions!

Nobody is taking away guns jerry, but some people are DUMB and accidents happening just this weekend alone by people who think they know how to handle guns almost killed people at three separate gun shows in three different states by being sloppy.
      1) CNN reports – 3 wounded in N.C. at gun show after a shotgun accidently fires when the gun case is opened.
2)Channel 8 News Indianapolis – Man accidently shot outside gun show at the Indy 1500 Knife & Gun Show while trying to load a gun he bought WHILE WALKING BACK TO HIS CAR.
3)DEALER accidently shoots man in the leg and arm at a Ohio gun show WHEN HE ACCIDENTLY PULLED THE TRIGGER (?) ON A GUN that still had a round in the chamber.

While these may have been LEGAL guns belonging to the legal owner WHOSE GUNS OBAMA IS NOT TRYING TO TAKE AWAY, I brought this up because people are careless and a lot of gun deaths are cause by people who should know better.

I hope he doesn't use executive order. I think a bill like this should go through Congress. And the children are being used for political propaganda- uhh

    • Caramon

Children will always add an emotional appeal to the topic. However, sometimes children are much more wise than some of us dumb adults. In this case, I really don't see too much wrong with it. In truth, it was the children who were in danger in the Newtown shooting. But I will have to agree that the regulations should go through Congress, not because I am against the Presidential executive order or regulations. But because I feel these issues need support from both sides. If any issue should be non-partisan, it is this one.

Well Caramon there may be hope for you yet!

I personally see no reason why across the board registration of all guns even those sold in private sales shouldn't be registered. I also see no point in ammo clips that hold more than 10 bullets, those should be band. Frankly, if you can't sufficiently defend yourself with 10 bullets... for the safety of everyone you shouldn't own a gun.

Plus, what is the point of the private individual owning an AR 15 they can't hunt wild game with?.A gun that functions only for the slaughter of people should be reserved for military use. Private ownership makes no logical sense if a person wants to use these guns they should be owned by a firing range for target practice. No person living in a free country under the rule of law needs and assault rifle.

I hear the NRA, the gun lobby, and others say the assault weapons ban didn't work. How do we know it didn't? Ten years is a very limited test for any item, and the ban wasn't fully implemented or fully enforced.

All I can say, is what we have and are doing currently certainly isn't working. Gun deaths are on course to surpass traffic deaths in 2 years....and millions of vehicles are being used on our highways 24/7. That fact should point out that having NO ban hasn't worked either.

reported a bit more than 20 people were being held, including Americans, Britons, Norwegians, French and Japanese, citing the local authorities.

“Algeria will not respond to terrorist demands and rejects all negotiations,” Interior Minister Daho Ould Kablia said on television. He denied that the militants were from Mali or Libya, possibly suggesting they were from Algeria itself.

In a statement, BP said the site was “attacked and occupied by a group of unidentified armed people,” and some of its personnel are believed to be “held by the occupiers.”

The number and identities of the hostages were still unclear, but Ireland announced that a 36-year-old married Irish man was among them, while Japan and Britain said their citizens were involved as well. A Norwegian woman said her husband called her saying he had been taken hostage.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that according to their information “U.S. citizens were among the hostages.”

In addition to those killed — one of them a Briton — six were wounded in the attack, including two foreigners, two police officers and two security agents, the state news agency reported.

Hundreds of Algerians work at the plant and were taken in the attack, but the state news agency reported that they have gradually been released in small groups, unharmed by the late afternoon.

A group called the Katibat Moulathamine, or the Masked Brigade, called a Mauritanian news outlet to say one of its affiliates had carried out the operation on the Ain Amenas gas field, taking 41 hostages from nine or 10 different nationalities, including the seven Americans.

The group’s claim could not be independently substantiated and the U.S. embassy said it wasn’t “aware of any U.S. citizen casualties.”

The mental health issue is a common thread in all these shootings, I think these guys would have went on a shooting spree with whatever they had. It has to be easier to commit these unbalanced people because they obviously weren't getting the help they needed at home. It shouldn't be as easy as it was in the 50's and 60's where it didn't take much at all to lock some one away but it has to be made easier than what it is now where it's almost impossible to pull someone out of society, regardless of what their family or doctors say.

      KAP,

I mentioned this above but what HAS to be talked about is how privacy issues will be addressed. Who gets it? How will it be accessed without breaking current law? How will that get relayed to legal gun sellers? Even in this, there is always the risk of someone misusing this info! This really is a much deeper issue than most understand. What is the answer? I have no idea!

      January 16, 2013 at 3:42 pm |

It was the liberals who condemed people being checked for mental stability. That is researchable. I look at it as i do having bamman in office. This is what you voted for, now you live with it. its terrible though to exploit children for politicle gains. no class at all.

        Moose,

Sorry but I did not vote for Obama! Secondly, YOU will have to live with it too. Thirdly, I do agree that children should not have been used in such an emotionally charged issue BUT, if their parents agreed to it, who am I, who are you, or anybody else?

        January 16, 2013 at 4:01 pm |
      • Caramon

Privacy issues will always bring concern. Remember the issue of privacy over wire taps during the Bush administration after 911. I agree that I wouldn't want to be in the President's chair at this time. As a father, I do believe the Newtown shootings affected the President as it did many people.

        January 16, 2013 at 4:23 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Moose, it is far worse, far-far-worse that children in this nation are victims of guns. Period. And, to pretend that their fears and their voices don't matter is wrong. That they wanted to voice their opinions by writing to Pres. Obama, and that he in turn included them is a message to all -They are the inheritors of this country's future and you are not too young to count in an important dialogue that affects children everyday.
So many accidents with guns by children even, could have been prevented by adults. We have been sloppy in our due diligence and have paid a heart-heavy price for it.
As far as reloading at lighting speed – police reported hearing the Aurora shooters gun pop off 29 rounds in 30 seconds over a 911 call by someone in the theatre. He killed 12 people and wounded 70 that night. Mental health programs in this country have been cut over and over. Law efforcement efforts have been cut that track illegal weapons stolen or sold. We should be ashamed that it has taken an unbearable toll on our people without common-sense steps. But, we have to take those steps and not look away.

      • Frank Marshall Davis

If memory serves I think in the 50's it took only ONE "qualified" doctor and a family member's signature to commit a person.

        January 17, 2013 at 4:14 am |
      • jean2009

Frank: i think you need to go back and review what mental health care was like in the 50's. By the 60's and 70's it was a mess. Jimmy Carter tried to improve the situation, but Ronald Reagan took the law and threw those who needed mental health help out on the street to save money. Changing a law that was intended to help, and in effect throwing the baby out with the bath water.

And Steveo, I will point out that in many of these mass gun murders children have died ....and in a free country children therefore should have a right to speak.

Since I take it you are one of those people who endows embryos with rights before they are born ....I am one who endows children with the right of free speech once they are here.

        Jean,

        1. Did you even bother to carefully read my post? I don't think you did! Read the last part! IF THE PARENTS AGREED! Looks like the parents agreed or else they would not have been there. Still my opinion i my opinion

        2. Nobody is advocating the stripping of rights from children BUT remember PARENTS are still held responsible for children that young (notice how it goes back to the PARENTS).

        3. Yes, as a Christian, I hate the idea of abortion. Do I get to enjoy my 1st amendments too? I have never protested a clinic, I have never screamed and yelled at a woman entering or exiting a clinic, nor have I harmed an abortionist! AND I never will! God gave the gift of choice! Along with choice, whether good or bad comes consequences, whether good or bad! We as a nation are already paying a price for disgarding the unborn like yesterday's trash! (We can further discuss if you want).

        4. You endow rights to no one. I am sure you support those rights but you certainly don't endow them!

      • Frank Marshall Davis

NOT once did I say we should go back to 50's mental health with the shock treatment and so forth. I merely commented on the ease at which some one could be committed at that time frame, but thanks for the info.

        January 17, 2013 at 5:45 pm |
      • jean2009

Frank not once did I state that you wanted to go back to the policies of the 1950's, just that you should review the fact it was a time when they could commit a person with one signature, and the treatment was horrible.

Steveo....the assumption by most people would be... if and when children are present in the White House, and allowed to voice their concerns on policy that their parents have given consent, and are no doubt are present in the audience. To me that would seem a given. I don't envision the White House as a einity that would go out and round up children who lacked permission to be present, and to voice their opinions.....do you?

To be honest, I doubt if there is any person that considers abortion should be the first, only, or best method of birth control, but I still feel it should be a legal and safe option.

People can misuse information regardless of when, where, and how or for what it is provided. I have a grandchild whose ID was stolen when the State computer system was hacked...it has taken years of work trying to clear up the mess and her credit history record, her credit has been ruined. It has been so bad that she may even need to have a new SS number issued. So... do you recommend not getting an education?

CNN, PLEASE get the details accurately. Jim Acosta just reported that the armed guards at Sidwell Friends School are Secret Service agents protecting the President's daughters. NO, that's not correct. IN ADDITION to the the Secret Service protecting the President's daughters, the school currently hires 11 armed guards on its own. This is a valid point that the NRA is raising. Why are the children of the political elite more deserving of such protection than everyone's child?

Again, The Obama Administration proposed money for "Secure Our Schools" policing grants that would provide funding to improve school safety – IN 2012 – CONGRESS NIXED IT!!!! A little item you overlooked in your 'concern'??

For the NRA to use a video accusing the President of being and elitist because his children are protected by the secret service is lacking in intelligence (excuse lame use of words to get by the moderator). First the Secret Service Protection code that protects the President and his family, plus several other people has been in place since 1901, when President McKinley was killed.

obama surrounds himself with children to hype the public on gun control. Why must he politicize EVERYTHING? He arms rebels around the world to over throw their govts. while taking semi-automatic rifles away from law abiding tax paying Americans(who have the right to protect themselves from their govt.)... this will not correct the problem, obama knows it and so does any thinking person on the planet. Again, obama chooses to divide the country...create more confusion and anger. This is the mark of a true Marxist/community organizer. I wish we had a real president who is inclusive and will pull the country together...he promised this and has done the opposite. Throw the scum bag out!

Just this week, jerry, a Mom in New York left a FLARE GUN, and a .22 CALIBER PISTOL in her 7 year old son's school backpack along with A LOADED MAGAZINE and 17 MORE BULLETS IN A PLASTIC BAG. She realized her mistake AFTER the kid had left for school. Before getting to her son, he had already passed the flare gun to a classmate. After checking, police found the gun was not registered, which lead them to search her home where they found more ammunition and seven bags of marijuana.
Child Protective Services took the boy and his nine yr. old brother into custody.

Obama can't get his plan through Congress, at least part of it. 1.) Republican controlled House. 2.) Democrats with NRA backings and who won't vote for it if they want to keep their position in the Senate combined with Senate Republicans

    January 17, 2013 at 7:00 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

      Don't bet on that one.

      January 17, 2013 at 7:18 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

Recent polling has 93% of gun-owning Americans supporting the President's background checks on all gun sales. 85% of NRA members supporting the President's background checks on all gun sales. And, 63% Republicans polled support the President's background checks on all gun sales.
The national mood over the NRA's influence has soured and if the Repubs and Dems. who are afraid of not being given an A Rating from that organization continued to brown nose them, they will most likely suffer the wrath of the people instead.
I mentioned before the bravery of Pres. H.W.Bush on taking Excecutive Action to ban assault weapons – but, after the NRA called Federal Law Enforcement "Jack-booted Thugs", President Bush publically discontinued his NRA Membership in protest of that remark. The NRA sheeply walked the comment back but, several law enforcement officers, including my husband, discontinued their memberships in disgust and in solidarity with President Bush.

      • DEcember 2012

The NRA are not really beholden to the vast majority of their members who were for the most part responsible gun owners. The organization is managed by gun manufacturers and those who have ties to the arms dealers. The polling is betrayed by the organization's successful efforts to block legislation to close loopholes in background checks, and to even just study the causes of gun violence. It is obvious in their rhetoric and their messaging which have been anything but sensible or even plausible. It is unfortunate however that they still have the clout and power that makes even Senate Democrats hesitate to agree to some sensible gun control legislation. I think it is time to write to Congress and make them realize that the rating they should care about is not the one the NRA gives them.

        January 18, 2013 at 3:27 am |
      • Marie

I am not talking about background checks, that's why I said part of the plan. And if people like Mark Begich want to keep their jobs in the Senate come 2014, they aren't going to ban assault rifles in a state that is big on guns.

        January 19, 2013 at 9:52 am |
      • Marie

And again, I don't own a gun and wouldn't want to, but there are some things in this plan that many journalists, congressman, etc. are unlikely to get passed. This isn't so much that I support the NRA, because I really am not a fan of lobbyists, but you have to take what you can get.
