Being a parent is a lifetime commitment. Parents of children with mental health problems must be responsible for seeking and securing mental health treatment for the lifetime of their children, as long as the parent shall live. If parents do not do this, who will? Only parents know if their children are "undercover lunatics", there is no government agency or doctor that could be hired to identify "undercover lunatics", because they are undercover! Once parents are held jointly responsible for the crimes of the child lunatics that have manufactured and unleashed on society, things will change.

Adam's absent father and ineffective mother failed. There exists no excuse for such failure. The children of Sandy Hook paid the price for the failure of Adam's parents. Only Adam's parents knew Adam was an "undercover lunatic". No one else knew, or could have known, which is why the parents are the responsible party that should be held accountable.
So, recognizing her son had mental issues, she thought it eould be a good idea to teach him how to use an assault weapon? And recognizing her son had mental issues, she decided not secure her assault weapons was a good plan?

Had the Lanza's known that as parents, they would be held jointly responsible for the actions of their son, maybe they would have been more responsible, and maybe children would not have had to die to prove there parenting methods were a failure. Recognizing the mental illness is half the parental responsibility, seeking and securing the correct treatment is the other half. I'm sick of hearing kids say, "I did the best I could", who grow up to be parents and say, "I did the best I could". If your best as a parent is not good enough, PAY THE PRICE!

that's one way, but definitely not the cure. There will be no end, but our jobs as parents/leaders, teachers, families and friends is to do whatever possible to keep our lives safe. majority of gun violence is not from mentally ill or suicidal folks. it's domestic violence, gangs, drug dealers, social gatherings like clubs, etc.

A jobs bill would be more spending, so I will give you 3 guesses on who would be against that.
I do not blame Adam Lanza for his crimes, he was mentally ill and his parents (both of them) failed him and failed the children of Sandy Hook. Adam's mother paid her debt to society, however, Adam's absent father, who failed to control his mentally ill son, is still on the lamb.
At some point, Adam must have know right from wrong and took a bad turn. He should share some of the blame but only his maker can judge him now.
This is very naive, wishful thinking and shows no understanding or appreciation for mental illness.
There are many types of mental illness, I could be well naive since I do not know just what Adam suffered with, but I know for a fact that not all people with mental illness shoot defenseless people regardless of opportunity and ability. It will be unfortunate that people dealing with mental illness will receive some backlash from this and I think it is unfair to treat them the same way. I do agree however that people with violent tendencies and mood swings due to illness or medication should be kept as far away from guns as possible.
You're pretty much right December 2012. The condition he suffered from is not one that's prone to making people violent psychos or unable to know right from wrong.
I'm curious to see how they propose to flag those who are mentally ill. How exactly will this appear in a background check?

Current law will have to change. Medical records are supposed to be private. In order for that info to be made avaialble for databases, Congress is has to be SPECIFIC on this or else, there will be loop holes all over the place

It is impossible to identify the "undercover mentally ill'. Only the parents have any chance, whatsoever, to identify their "undercover lunatic" children, which is why parents must be held responsible for failing to control their mentally ill children. Who else could we "hire" to do this job? There is no one else to do it, other than the parents.

Steveo, Charles Krauthhamer appeared on Fox news about the privacy issue. He is also a doctor of psychiatry. Apparently many if not most states already have laws in place about reporting patients who may pose a possible threat. This includes psychiatrists and medical doctors. It is something I didn't know about. It came up after the President signed the executive orders against gun violence. It maybe something to look into.

What happens to famillies who want to own a weapon or weapons but have a live in familly member with a mental illness? I know you cannot answer this and neither can I but we do we go? Whose rights outweight the other? This is a very deep issue!

Of course this is a very deep question. Did the mother know that her son was mentally ill. Guns of any type should be under proper storage, lock and key. The son should not have easy access. I know many gun owners. They all have gun safes for storage so their children cannot get into them.
Agreed and whether around toddlers or those with a mental illness or anything else, if not in use guns need to be locked away. I would find it hard to believe that a parent would not know the condition of their children, as far as Lanza is concerned, his illness was not a new occurrance. She had to have known.
I know when I was growing up, I couldn't sneeze funny without my parents knowing it. I will agree with one thing Sue said however. Armor piercing bullets should not be allowed. I thought they were already illegal. maybe not. Although I suspect they have purpose if a home invader is sporting kevlar. I would find that a big exception though.
Assuming they define some way of reporting those who could be a threat to the public, what happens if the doctor never reports a person and then something happens? Who will be held liable?

Agreed! I don't understand why any civilian requires armor piercing bullets either! One thing for sure, whatever the plan is going to be, it needs to be legal and effective, not just a plan for the sake of having a plan!

most of these proposals have the support of the major police departments. I'm sure they would like to see their jobs made easier by less assault type weapons. clips with less ammo and armor piercing bullets taken out of the mix.

Too bad this President, VP and Sen Feinstein aren't together on the issue of mental health, school security and forget about the gun confiscation/Registration legislation. Missing the point altogether is the hallmark of the Obama/Democrat Administration not only on the Newtown Shooting-Gun Control Issue, but on Mental Health intervention initiatives, as well as school securtiy. Don't forget the fiscal crisis, entitlements, and national debt. Focusing on gun control when there are so many other "real" issues facing this President and Government.

I don't understand why this is so controversial. So what if we redraw the line on what type of weapons we want ordinary citizens to be able to by? You can't buy a grenade launcher. You can't by a 50 caliber machine gun. We set limits. The majority of Americans want to change those limits.

I don't get it. I believe this is more of a gun grab than anything. I think the government had an excuse drop out of the sky on their head which was Sandy Hook, and they ran with it. What about cars, should we quit making cars because so many people are killed in car accidents? It isn't the car it's the driver. Just like it isn't the gun it is the person squeezing the trigger. The people who kill with guns will still be able to get guns. Criminals have always been able to get guns. And I am sick and tired of you mentioning guns for hunting or guns to protect your home. Our 2nd Amendment is to give us a right to have weapons in case our government goes bad. The 2nd Amendment never had hunting in their mind when this was written. We should be able to have any weapon we want to have and you have no right to tell us we can't otherwise you will be guilty of tyranny.

One thing you have to point out, is that people and kids are like lemmings running off a cliff, and if you do not see some correlation between the shootings and news media on TV coverage, then you'r out of touch just like the lawmakers and others on capital hill with this issue. People flock to buy a lottery tickets, when it reaches 3,4 or 500 hundred million, when the news media shows it on TV over and over again, kids want a certain item after seeing it on TV or news over and over. It goes the same for the shootings at the schools and the repeating occurrence of it happening. I am not saying there are not other factors too, but if you must limit a consumer product for the safety for just one death, it must be across the board on all consumer products. The lawmakers have not done anything about the automobile industry over the last ten or twenty years of the thousands of deaths each year. The government has given them money to stay in business, which has contributed to the number of deaths each year. There are more than 32,000 deaths from vehicles each year including children, yet the automobile industry has been increasing the horsepower of vehicles for quite a while, We have speed limits on the highway and police officers on the roads. A vehicle can not legally drive over 75-80 mph (maybe Montana), but the government and lawmakers have never made a law to restrict all vehicles to a lower speed such as 35 mph. This would eliminate high speed pursuits, lower theft on vehicles and save thousands of the lives, but you do not see them bringing up this issue.
Hope there's some middle ground on this matter. Both sides seem pretty emphatic.

Major police chiefs are politicians, and their primary concern is to A) stay employed and B) keep their troops safe. Less guns in their minds equals less threat to their officers. Blood on the streets they cheer with the introduction of CCW laws, that didn't come to pass. Would it be any surprise to anybody that this group would advocate for banning firearms and magazines used in less than 1% of gun homicides, without any regard to the differences between rural and urban America's needs, or the 2nd Amendment. Would BO and Biden actually consult anyone that isn't going to tell them what they want to hear, seriously. These guys know what they want to do regarding banning firearms and at this point it just amounts to scheming to get it accomplished. Disgusted by the sham that is our administration.
