Obama's day ahead: Sequester at Newport News Shipbuilding

President Obama heads to Newport News, VA to talk about the effect that forced government spending cuts will have on Newport News Shipbuilding, the largest manufacturing employer in the state of Virginia. The company is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), and in his remarks the president will highlight the impact that furloughs at one factory can have across the country. The White House circulated this information late Monday night:

HII’s already fragile supply base consists of 5,000 companies located in all fifty states that depend on the work that companies like Newport News Shipbuilding do, many of which are small businesses that rely on Newport News Shipbuilding for their bottom line.

In Virginia alone, approximately 90,000 civilian Department of Defense employees would be furloughed if the sequester was to hit, reducing gross pay by around $648.4 million in total. As well, it would cancel the maintenance of 11 ships in Norfolk, defer four projects at Dahlgren, Oceana, and Norfolk, and delay other modernization and demolition projects. The President will urge Congressional Republicans to come to the table and compromise to find a solution to avert the sequester, and will make clear that the only reason these cuts will take place is if Congressional Republicans choose to protect loopholes only enjoyed by the wealthiest and big corporations at the expense of jobs in Virginia.

The president will depart the White House at 10:50 AM, and his remarks in Norfolk will come a little after 1PM. Here's the full schedule as released by the White House: FULL POST

Obama's day ahead: Hanging with governors

It's a fairly quiet day for President Obama as he begins what is likely to be a busy week ahead of the implementation of the sequester on Friday.

The president will appear before cameras briefly at 11:05 to address governors of both parties at the White House. A White House official told CNN all 50 governors were invited to the event, though an actual attendance list is not available.

Obama's Day Ahead: About those spending cuts...

President Obama begins the shortened week with remarks Tuesday morning urging action to avoid the automatic across-the-board budget cuts called the sequester. The remarks will come at at a 10:45 am event, which the White House says will include first responders whose jobs may be lost if the spending cuts are allowed to go forward, is the first White House effort in more than two weeks to publicly draw attention to the issue.

The cuts are scheduled to hit Friday, March 1 "if Congress fails to find a path forward on a balanced deficit reduction," the White House said. The reductions could spur the loss of thousands of jobs.

Day 2 post SOTU focuses on early childhood education

President Obama continues his post-State of the Union tour on Thursday by traveling to Decatur, Georgia to talk about quality preschool education for every child in America. He’ll start his time in Decatur off by visiting a pre-kindergarten class in a nearby early learning center. CNN has obtained a letter to parents of the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, saying the president would be visiting their school (despite the school system being on winter break.) Parents are encouraged to bring their kids in specifically for the President's visit. His main remarks will be later at 1:20p at the Decatur Recreation Center.

President Obama will return to DC in the late afternoon, in plenty of time to celebrate Valentine's Day with the First Lady (they’ve gone out to dinner two of the last four years).

In addition, President Obama participates in a Google+ Fireside Hangout live from the Roosevelt Room at 4:50p. According to the White House, “During the hangout, which is hosted and moderated by Google, the President will connect with people who are active online to discuss the policies and proposals in the speech.”

Obama takes his SOTU message on the road

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (CNN)-  Seeking to build momentum and rally support for his jobs agenda, President Obama began the first of three campaign-style day trips around the country Wednesday a day after his fourth State of the Union address.

Traveling to Asheville, North Carolina Mr. Obama spoke at an auto parts plant to highlight his proposals he hopes will make America a "magnet" for jobs and manufacturing.

"I believe in manufacturing I think it makes our country stronger," Mr. Obama told the small crowd of workers gathered around the makeshift podium in the center of the factory.

Calling the middle class the "true engine of American economic growth" and "the North star that guides everything we do,"  the president warned there would be "no magic bullet".

He went on to try to rally support for his proposals now stalled in a partisan Congress.

“[W]e've got to stop with some of the politics that we see in Washington sometimes that's focused on who's up and who's down, and let's just focus on the same kind of common sense and cooperation that we're seeing at this plant," said Mr. Obama.  FULL POST

Obama to Asheville , NC post State of the Union travel

Last night President Obama delivered his State of the Union address in front of the 113th congress. In his speech he called for the expansion of pre-school education for every 4-year-old, an increase in the minimum wage and a plan to create 15 "manufacturing institutes". He reiterated his call for a program to repair the infrastructure of the nation's roads and bridges. On the foreign policy front he announced 33,000 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan by this time next year.

Today the president will travel to Asheville, NC to highlight a Canadian auto parts company that has recently increased it's investment in the U.S.

Tonight: The State of the Union address

Tonight President Obama will deliver his first State of the Union address of his second term. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Monday, “The economy is not in a worse place than it was before if you talk about the comparison between now and when he gave his first state of the union address. There is no comparison. We were in economic free fall. What the president has been saying and I am sure will say again is we are at a moment where the economy is poised to continue to grow, to continue to build on the progress we made, to continue to build on the job creation we've achieved – over 6.1 million jobs created by our businesses over the past 35 or 36 months.”

We’re also expecting him to touch on proposals for issues like clean energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and education. And of course, we expect him to talk about his administration’s push for gun control and their proposals to curb gun violence.

Among the guests in the First Lady’s box will be former Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha, who received the Medal of Honor in a ceremony at the White House on Monday; Hadiya Pendleton’s parents (Hadiya was the teenage girl gunned down in Chicago a week participating the Inaugural parade); Desiline Victor, a 102-year-old woman from FL involved in voting rights; and Bradley Henning, a middle class American who is a machinist from Louisville, Kentucky.
