Tonight: The State of the Union address

Tonight President Obama will deliver his first State of the Union address of his second term. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters on Monday, “The economy is not in a worse place than it was before if you talk about the comparison between now and when he gave his first state of the union address. There is no comparison. We were in economic free fall. What the president has been saying and I am sure will say again is we are at a moment where the economy is poised to continue to grow, to continue to build on the progress we made, to continue to build on the job creation we've achieved – over 6.1 million jobs created by our businesses over the past 35 or 36 months.”

We’re also expecting him to touch on proposals for issues like clean energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and education. And of course, we expect him to talk about his administration’s push for gun control and their proposals to curb gun violence.

Among the guests in the First Lady’s box will be former Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha, who received the Medal of Honor in a ceremony at the White House on Monday; Hadiya Pendleton’s parents (Hadiya was the teenage girl gunned down in Chicago a week participating the Inaugural parade); Desiline Victor, a 102-year-old woman from FL involved in voting rights; and Bradley Henning, a middle class American who is a machinist from Louisville, Kentucky.

White House Schedule:

10:15AM THE PRESIDENT and THE VICE PRESIDENT receive the Presidential Daily Briefing. Oval Office

9:00PM THE PRESIDENT delivers the State of the Union Address; THE VICE PRESIDENT, THE FIRST LADY, and DR. BIDEN attend. United States Capitol

I think we all know what the State of the Union is. Food Stamps, Welfare, Over Extended Unemployment Benifits, and of course a 16.7 Trillion Dollar Federal Debt along with Nanny Staters, high unemployment and lying Liberals.

You forgot to list the 2.2 billion dollar free phone program. In 2008 this program was wasteful enough when it was at 8.9 million. These people in Washington need to start making difficult choices and totally eliminate things like this before asking to raise taxes on working people (as Obama plans to do tonight).

You mean the phone for the needy program that started in 1985 under Reagan with land-line phones and then in 2007 wa changed to cell phones under Bush. They actually date back to legislation passed and signed under Woodrow Wilson...The funding for Safe Link Wireless is provided through a non-profit.The Universal Service Fund. No taxpayer money is used to provide the service.
The Obama Phone? do a fact check.

MOOOOOse. Seriously, dude, you must be at least 3 ft. 2 inches tall with less than a towering intellect to go along with it. Can you embarass yourself any more than this? You did admit you got on here to have fun, IF your shoe-lifts don't satisfy your need to be noticed, maybe you could buy yourself a carnival fun-house mirror to entertain yourself with instead.

the new norm= poverty for America, the great inept one just keeps spewing falsehoods !!!!!!!

    • jean2009

Gitmo would have been closed long ago...but the do nothing GOP wouldn't move. GOP would rather you receive junk mail six days a week, and keepoing on pumping out those tanks and jet parts the military says it doesn't need, and it can no longer use. They would rather do that than do something constructive like helping rebuild our infracstructure so everytime we have a global warming event homes and businesses are without power for 10-20 days at the cost of billions in lost jobs. .

During the first two years of the President's first term, the GOP couldn't stop a toilet let alone the closing of Gitmo.

So, instead of fixing the plumbing problem, the Congress just bought themselves rubber boots and clothes pins for their noses? Sounds about right.

        February 15, 2013 at 2:02 pm |
      • Caramon

Yes Cynthia. Considering Congress was composed of a Democratic House and Democratic Senate when Gitmo was to be closed.

I take it you are black. Do you understand that obama has done so little for your race? Simply put, obama is a failed president held up by a Marxist press in America. Failure domestically and abroad...we will soon pay the price for this...God help us.

      • gary

I'm not black ,but I do know that no president can do their country right if congress or the other side ( Reb.) don't want to work with the president. I believe if he was white their wouldn't be so much hate on him. Bush really messed up everything ,and they still voted him back in and he got more respect than Obama to the end.Work has picked up,housing is better , one war down, trying to help middle class and lower class ,but getting stopped by congress. I think he has good intentions ,but this country don't want to listen,.My opinion the Rebublicans don't want their pockets half full or be beaten by a black man. This is from a conserned Viet Nam Vet.Give the President a chance without interferences from congress etc. This country might be surprised, good things might happened.

jerry I am not black and I can tell you it is disgusting to see a loser say one day ...*if I were president I would nominate Chuck Hagel Sec. Defense*, and look what happened when he lost and the President actually nominated him for Sec. Def. ....Hypocrisy Much! Answer me a question...why does John Boehner always look like he is having gas pains? The whole bunch of the GOP should be sent packing.

        February 13, 2013 at 7:10 pm |

You know Jerry, you could possibly be wrong. Maybe BLK can tell us what the President has done to improve life for black Americans. Give him a chance to explain his position.

You sound like Obama. You would think he would have learned he needs to get along with congress to get anything done. But, we all know he doesn't want to..

      February 13, 2013 at 6:29 am |
      • jean2009

You would think the GOP in congress would have learned to get along with the human race...something they've totally failed at!

      • Caramon

Hi Jean. Remember one of your previous posts?

"BTW...I still don't see where you have provided a copy/paste showing credit where credit was due.
Caramon feel free to copy and paste also!"

And so I copied and pasted about my statement praising the President for his handling of Sandy. In fact it was on the very same article. Feel free and check if you would like.

Now, let us see if you can make any positive statement about the GOP. Give credit where credit is due as you would say. Really, they need to get along with the human race? That comment is beneath you.!

There is work out there. There a lot of people that don't want to get off their butts to look. There are to many that want to play the system; which can work .I see many around my state hustling and getting work.Stop letting the foriengers take the work there would be more.Problem is the foriengers want to work and there are so many in our country that don't want to work. They rather set in front of a tv play video games etc. Many don't want to start from bottom up,they think the world owes them and won't work without making over ten dollars an hour.

This truly seems to be the founding of an Obamanation. Sad .... this President is a truly polarizing figure. His Hope was for this Change. TO DIVIDE this country... He finally has done that.... Wonder what he will say about Donner? Something like the police acted stupidly no doubt...

Shame on you and the other libs who want to censor anything and everyone that calls Obama out for what he (and you libs) are and want.
The most recent example is Dorner. Many of you crazy libs, like Brian Ross on ABC, came out and basically supported this lib nut and called out LA Police as "terrorists". I knew you crazy libs would support murder if it advanced your cause. We now have another example of it (along with Bengazi and F+F).

Marco Rubio worries about his neighbors? Really considering he lives in a West Palm Beach $675,000 house with a pool, and so do his neighbors. Some working class neighborhood! Pitifully out of touch.

Too funny Jean! Where does Clinton or Obama have their homes? Here is a hint, it!'s not in the hood either! The term neighbor is broader than just who is living next door!

I have heard tonight about a lot of things we need to do about like all of them has said. The one thing i didn't hear is that he will work with them to get the problems solved just send me a bill and I will sign it. Like most he uses a few that have had bad things happen to there families to make a point. Like most I never heard him say he would sit down with them to help try to find a salution. I am sorry but my opinion of the Presidents over the past 20 years is that of a CEO of a company, you do what I say and if it does not work it is your fault and your job on the line. We seem to be backwords when it comes to jobs in this country, we pay the ones that do the most the least and the ones that do the least the most.
I can't tell you how many times I have gone up to a maneger to talk about the job and have to wait until they have got done talking about something that has nothing to do with the job. They think I am going to walk away if they keep talking but I don't, I stay until I say what I need to. I see it as a crazy notion if someone makes 4 or 5 million a year should expect some one making 10 dollar an hour to know more then they do.
To sum it up I mean the President should be involved in and working with others to get things done constantly involved.
I would say for one he was involved in this speach as long as it made him look good.

What I didn't hear is what will get cut in order to fund these new new proposals! What I did hear is chants of raising taxes again! What happened the other part of that "balanced approach"?

      February 13, 2013 at 9:08 am |
      • Caramon

No Steveo, they are not planning to raise taxes. They are planning to eliminate loopholes this time. Of course this is what the Republicans and Romney wanted to do first to raise revenue before raising taxes. Now that the President has tax increases he can add to revenue by cutting loopholes.

I have heard many say that the budget will be cut. Yet no one has provided any detail about the cuts including people on this site. It is one question that has remained unanswered these past 2 months.

Funding these proposals are up to Congress. If they are popular enough then they will get traction. Every State of the Union address is a list of things the President wants Congress to get done. The real question is, can this Congress get it done? I have a bad feeling we won't get anything done before the midterm elections.

        February 13, 2013 at 11:44 am |

Caramon, you're right that tax increases were not mentioned last night but you really think there is no talk about raising taxes? The talk of raising taxes was already mentioned earlier this month.

How about all those tanks and jet parts the military no longer wants.
How about closing some military bases...do we need 56 bases in Germany?
Sell some buildings that are sitting empty
Raise lease fees on federal land.

when is the press going to start holding obama to the fire? Are they waiting for him to destroy our economy? Everything he mentioned was anti jobs growth in this country... no jobs no hope. Certainly no hope or change from obama.

For the last 75 plus years the Liberals have been selling snake oil and the peasants have been buying it. And make no mistake, the Inmates are in charge of the Asylum. And unfortuntatly we have an empty Suit at the Wheel. The man rambled all over the place last night with his musings. I wonder how we got as far as we have without the pesants in charge. Will the Congress, make that the senate pass a budget in the next 4 years. Don't count on it. But do expect the liberals to try to raise your taxes !!

Who really cares what the state of the union really is… Obama is off on another vacation to Palm Beach while Michelle is off with the VP (Vacation Prince) to Aspen… Our tax dollars at work here people.. Not even the 1% take so many vacations as this group of misfits. The king , the queen, the princesses and the dog… all spending our tax dollars and living the high life. How dare the president tell us the economy is getting better- the nerve. Better for the Obamas every day – of course they are constantly planning their next vacation.. ON OUR DIME…
