Obama's day ahead: Sequester at Newport News Shipbuilding

President Obama heads to Newport News, VA to talk about the effect that forced government spending cuts will have on Newport News Shipbuilding, the largest manufacturing employer in the state of Virginia. The company is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), and in his remarks the president will highlight the impact that furloughs at one factory can have across the country. The White House circulated this information late Monday night:

HII’s already fragile supply base consists of 5,000 companies located in all fifty states that depend on the work that companies like Newport News Shipbuilding do, many of which are small businesses that rely on Newport News Shipbuilding for their bottom line.

In Virginia alone, approximately 90,000 civilian Department of Defense employees would be furloughed if the sequester was to hit, reducing gross pay by around $648.4 million in total. As well, it would cancel the maintenance of 11 ships in Norfolk, defer four projects at Dahlgren, Oceana, and Norfolk, and delay other modernization and demolition projects. The President will urge Congressional Republicans to come to the table and compromise to find a solution to avert the sequester, and will make clear that the only reason these cuts will take place is if Congressional Republicans choose to protect loopholes only enjoyed by the wealthiest and big corporations at the expense of jobs in Virginia.

The president will depart the White House at 10:50 AM, and his remarks in Norfolk will come a little after 1PM. Here's the full schedule as released by the White House:

Obama is worried. If the sequester happens and the sky doesn't fall, people will say cutting government was/is the right thing to do.
When all working Americans just took at least a 2% (some as much as 4.6%) cut in pay it seems reasonable that the fed govt can do the same.

MITCH McCONNELL'S HOME STATE will suffer a 21,484 JOBS LOSS.
JOHN BOEHNER'S HOME STATE will suffer up to a 30,000 JOB LOSS.

President Obama wants to replace the Sequester with a mix of Tax increases on the rich VS. less damaging spending reductions. After all, the Bush-era tax cuts for the rich were only 18% of the tax cuts made by the Congress so far. While something like 4,000 Air-Traffic Controllers will lose their jobs around the nation.

Ah, we just love Venture Capitalists, Hedge Fund Managers and Real Estate SHARKS so much we are willing to suspend belief – that they help strangle our democracy and capitalist system ( giving us the finger and laughing all the way to their bank) that we can subsidize their greed. But, hey, you can wash their laundry anytime – I'm sure they'll drop it off at your house.

First, it needs to be said that this site was beginning to look like Fox. Thanks for posting.
Didn't all working Americans just get hit with a 2% tax increase? Didn't high level earners just get hit with a 4.6% tax increase? Didn't all fed employees just get a raise in December (including our VP, Read and Boener)? Didn't the IRS recently hire over 5,000 employees with Obamacare? Isn't gas up 50% over the past 4 years? Isn't the cost of most food up over 15% over the past 4 years? Complain about those big dollar industries all you want, but the policies of Obama are killing middle class working people.
A balanced approach? Ok. We just increased taxes by billions – where are the cuts?
Ah, some people just love big government for big government sake.

John, I agree these posts were sounding like Fox Not News.
I posted this before and here it is again – You were asking about the cuts, which will be 2 to l against revenue increases.

Ok, I looked at it. What is it telling us (other than the president put himself in a very bad position)? Please understand, these "Washington 500" made this mess and they need to fix it. If we go line by line we see how bad this plan is. But, it is the only plan we have that actually cuts anything real.
You do understand the cost of government goes up next year, even with these "so called cuts"? The 2-4.6% tax we just got hit with was real. And, BTW, where is Obama??? On the road???

John, until we deal with the fact that there is supreme fraud in our tax code, which is, that SOME still benefit over others – paying only a 20% tax-rate that does not depend on them having SKIN IN THE GAME (meaning they're using the efforts of others with no risk) suckin' and jivin' the economy because of their overall feeling that they are so wonderful – supported by their massive PR that says the same – WE ARE GONNA BE SCREWED!! Doesn't matter who is President. Deal with it. And, you better start doing it pretty fast.
Then, while you're at it, question the so-called patriots who patriot their money right into off-shore tax havens after making their money in the good ol' U.S.of A..
IT ADDS UP. And, please, when dissing Occupy Wall Street, you might wonder where you were when the government was trying to re-establish small businesses destroyed on 9-11 WHY GOLDMAN SACHS (who is a big player in the "screw America" game) applied for, AND GOT money to build a two-square block behemoth in the Financial District.
If you want to get serious - then be my guest.

        February 26, 2013 at 12:24 pm |
      • John

Cynthia, I want OUR GOVERNMENT to get serious and understand THEY HAVE A SPENDING PROBLEM. They can't even admit that...
But, how easy is this. We agree, we need to fix the tax code. My guess is Romney would have focused on this. It matters who the president is – here is why. If you (or I, or Romney) were president it would be done, the tax code would be worked. Obama could have done it, but he decided he had "bigger priorities". We know it could have been done because Obama had a majority and he got Obamacare done against the majority of the American people. And now healthcare in this country is much worse (and will be going forward)...
I care less what individuals do with the money they earned as long as it is legal, and what you described is legal.
How did I dis OWS? I described what the majority of those people were, do nothing individuals who want for free what other people have worked for. They called themselves the "99%"? If 99% of this country were these OWS clowns what, IYO, would this country be?
And, I am against the government giving money it takes from me to give it to Goldman, Solindra, GM, or any other private firm. We are losing billions on GM, as it looks now. WHy didn't you mention them??

Thanks Cynthia for putting this into perspective. Alll Republicans want to do is CUT, CUT, CUT. What about the people that are going to be affected by this, they never think about the 99% of Americans.

Keep up the comments and don't let the Republicans take over the conversation.

The scarey thing is – I think he knows what he is doing. We will see where he targets the cuts. That will be telling. If he leaves a 2.2 billion dollar free phone program in place and cuts teachers or police or firefighters (or airport security, or traffic controllers, etc.) everyone will see him for what he really is.
And libs, save your response. Obama hasn't proposed one thing to cut, not one. That is as telling as it gets.

John you are so far off base it's not even funny. All my life i voted republican, I'm ex military 20+ years, I always have been fiscally conservative.....Until the tea party polarized our nation so bad, I now look like a liberal. That pisses me right the F6745K off.
Your line about the president not presenting any ideas of his own show only your hatered of the man. He has said repeatedly, close the tax loopholes that favor only the rich, and cut sensibly over time. NO meat cleaver, meticulous thought is what he wants.

        February 27, 2013 at 7:09 am |
      • Caramon

I said it before and I will say it again. The Republicans had plenty of opportunity to close tax loopholes during the past 2 years and are partially to blame for this. However, Democrats had just as much opportunity to close those loopholes 4 years before. Loopholes have favored both parties and both parties are to blame. It should have been the first way to get revenue increases. The fact that both parties are equally responsible is something we all should understand and quit these bipartisan arguments. It is solving none of the problems.

        February 27, 2013 at 9:02 am |
      • John

The Taxed Enough Already folks are the reason much needed cuts are about to happen. So, IYO, this country was on the right track in 2009 (prior to the Tea Party)? Obama was going to "fix" the country with his socialist-like policies? And you claim to be a former repub? What happened? And, how do you feel about the Obama scare tactics? He has done it at every turn, you know, every situation Obama calls a "crisis" needs to be taken "advantage of" as the Libs Dems say...

And, btw, I recall a similar argument when Kerry was running for office and people were calling Bush an idiot and Kerry a very smart man. When both released their grades from Harvard Bush had better grades.

      • Cynthia L.

Sorry, Caramon, I will disagree that G.W. was elected twice. He was given the Presidentcy the first time by the Supreme Court and the refusal of a do-over election in Florida which somehow magically pronounced their electoral votes went to Bush. Gore won popular vote by 500,000 overall. Second time, most agree that Americans are loathe to change horses in a time of war – Iraq. He was not a stellar leader in any way shape or form to be elected otherwise.

@John, no matter how bad the president screws something up, these cool-aid drinkers will not even admit any flow. aCriticalEye lays out his resume like he is showing his impartial bonafides when in reality he is a liberal hack. Fact is that Obama came up with the sequestration, taxes were raised in January on the rich and Obama has not provided any specifics on cutting. Those 3 facts are indisputable (but the libs will still say it isn't so). The reality is that Obama is a "Krugman" disciple plain and simple. Anyone who knows what Krugman says is that the government is underspending. A Nobel Prize winner huh....Well so was "Drone Killer Obama", he won the peace prize.

Stay stupid, Mooooooose – CONGRESS passed legislation to stop the prisoners of Guantanemo from being transferred to a Maximum Security Prison in Thomson, Illinois that our government already purchased in 2009/2010. Cynthia, are you talking about the prison where Obama basically said "screw congress, I am doing it my way"? You know, the one the House Appropriations Committee rejected – then the justice department utilized illegal assets to buy the $165 million dollar facility? That one? Wasn't Obama the one who signed H.R. 1540 into law prohibiting the transfer of GB detainees to the US?
I know, just another $165 million spent in error by this administration, but nothing to see here. It is not like we need to cut spending at the Fed level or anything like that....

        February 26, 2013 at 11:33 am |
      • Cynthia L.

So, basically, John, you are saying that Guantanemo doesn't cost us a dime and that our Federal Courts should NOT TRY these prisoners because not only the fact THEY have experience to do so successfully – they CAN'T??

That is not what I said – and you did not address the $165 million Obama wasted. And, do not get me started on the $750,000 for a soccer field at Gitmo. All prisons cost money.
And, yes, terror is war, terrorists need to be treated as war criminals, not let back out so they can kill more people.
And, yes, Gitmo is very political. Obama's "campaign lines" about Gitmo helped get him elected the first time.
You talk like Obama has no power and can do nothing. I do not think that is true, especially since he passed Obamacare (another money pit that will kill the middle class when those new policies kick in). The president will decide what is cut. We will all see what his priorities are...

John, what you clearly don't know and are ignorant to is the fact that government employees also took the 2% to 4.6% pay cut. Also, government employees have not received a pay raise in over 3 years. Many government employees actually do fall into the middle class and would be considered working americans. The general problem, as I see it, is that neither side is willing to make the necessary compromises or cuts to their proposals. Notice how none of these cuts or compromises have a negative affect on the paychecks of congress or the president. For I am sure that neither will be furloughed.

    February 26, 2013 at 9:12 am |
    • John

Bob, go back and look when their last increase was (December), then educate yourself on their COLA's every year, then look at their benefits package, then think about the fact that for them to be paid some other working person needs to have money taken out of their pay.
It seems to me Obama got his tax increases. ALL WORKING AMERICANS TOOK BETWEEN A 2%-4.6% hit in January. That equated to how many billions? WHere are the cuts? Heck, we now hear Obama doesn't even want the power to decide where the cuts can be made. What the heck kind of leader do we have??
I understand some government jobs are necessary. But I also see waste and the government picking winners and losers as if they are "investing" earned money, not tax dollars coming from some other working stiff like me.
Also, I have stated several times here, ALL OF THE "WASHINGTON 500" need to be voted out.

        February 26, 2013 at 1:04 pm |
      • John

Last I checked this is America. Do you think we should have laws against people sitting in a lazy boy watching TV?? I didn't think so. This is a free country. People should be able to do pretty much anything they want as long as they are not hurting others, IMO.
But, I will agree, things like NASCAR, Obama Phones, Solindra, TARP, Stimulas, 1.5 million to UofUtah to build a better joy stick, $325,000 for a robotic squirrel, $939,771 on a "fruit fly" study. Why didn't you mention any of these before Gitmo? Are these things ok for us to pay for? I didn't think so. Our government needs to make sure this stuff is done away with before layinf off teachers, police people, fire fighters, and most of the other workers Obama is talking about – wouldn't you agree?

        February 26, 2013 at 2:44 pm |
      • Caramon

Actually John, I think the point Cynthia was trying to make is many people do not take time to learn the issues before voting. Instead they spend time watching the tube. In other words, the incumbents continue to get re-elected. Cynthia feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I would agree there are certain studies that do not need to be funded when the government has no money. That would include the sx life of worms and the better joy stick. Fruit fly studies may have greater importance since the fruit fly, Drosophila, is a model organism in genetic studies. That study may be worth funding.

However, threatening to cut funding to the better joy stick does not appeal to the emotion of the populace. Tell people we are cutting the joy stick research funding and people say, so what. Cut police and teachers and people say, oh no!

        February 26, 2013 at 8:49 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

You are right about the fruit-fly studies, Caramon. We have huge amounts of fruit-bearing agriculture that not only feeds us, but others in this world. Fruit-flies ruin, and rather quickly the harvest just as it is ready to be picked, causing it to ripen faster and rot.
Let me also point out to John, who gives the impression that 'joysticks' are just for video-games and toy cars and seems to be oblivious to the uses in medical surgeries, nuclear science, deep-sea exploration, space exploration, and aircraft manipulation hardware, to name a few.
And, yes, Caramon, I was dissing the inattention of those voters who don't follow the issues until the last minute. Focusing on the adventures of Honey Boo-Boo seems somehow to be more important for these slackers.

But it is the President who signed the sequester into law and who said that he would veto any attempt by congress to circumvent it. How much is this unnessary trip going to cost the tax payers? Well the current administration has had over 4 years to come up with a budget, but did they? No they did not, so the donkeys brought this upon themselves, in fact the sequester was the brain child of our new Secretary of the Treasury, who is an ex Citibank employee who got a nice golden parachute bonus for leaving if he was able to secure a hi level government job. And how much time and money Obama wasted on the "no cuts tour"? I am sure it was much, much more...

So we learned that Obama starts his day at 10:05am. How about a briefing at 8:00am, like the rest of us, and get some work done. Then don't end your day at 3:05pm because the rest of us certainly don't.

Jealous are we? I heard that Paul Ryan does PX-90 workouts instead of doing his job in congress.

Mr Obama was holding their feet to the fire, he wanted both democrat & republican, both house & senate to compromise for the good of the whole. This sequester was meant to be a big stick to punish them for not doing their jobs. Now, dad has his belt off, and someone is going to take it.

The party of "NO COMPROMISE" is going to take it a lot rougher come 2014.

LOL, libs can't seem to call it the party of "NO" since they said yes and Obama wanted them to say no.
Kind of like when the libs say "the repubs said they want Obama to fail" or "the repubs want Obama to be a term president. These statements are laughable. It stands to reason that once the other party is voted in the other party wants them to be a one-termer. Is any lib going to disagree with this? I didn't think so.
Now the other one – At this point, I want Obama to fail at raising taxes again. I want him to fail at trying to scare the country into giving him his own way. I want him to fail at releasing illegals, especially since we have been told they are only going after illegals who commit crimes now. People saw what Obama was all about while he was a Senator and they did not like his ideas. Therefore, I assume just like the libs wanted Bush to fail in his second term (at least) the repubs felt the same way about Obama. The big difference? Bush didn't have the press following blindly.

In the New York Times today, self-described Republican, Sheila Bair, former chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and author of : "Bull by the Horns-Fighting to Save Main St. From Wall St. and Wall St. From Itself"
    says this –
Generous treatment of the financial sector and easy money from the Federal Reserve have done little to encourage sustainable economic growth. BUT have done wonders to increase Wall Street profits and inflate the values of stocks and bonds which are disproportionately owned by the rich who also sit on that money and not re-circulate it back into the economy. They have not been the job-creators that they were hoped to be.
Asking why Hedge Fund managers pay a lower tax on their earning as do managers of shoe stores. And why,
since the Fed is insisting on giving us cheap money, aren't we rebuilding the nation's infastructure that creates jobs and expands commerce, taking a long-term debt approach to financing it and repaying it over decades.

    I agree.

I agree also. I also think generous treatment of the government sector and easy money with TARP and stimulas has done little to fix any problems or encourage hiring in the private sector. BUT have done wonders in increasing funds to "green companies" and entitlement programs which disproportionately promote Democrat Fund Raising and votes. They have not been job creators that they were hoped to be. Asking why working Americans keep taking the brunt of higher taxes and higher food and fuel costs. Asking why government needs to keep increasing spending of borrowed money during a 5 year recession when it should be cutting waste and totally updating the tax codes to help create jobs in the private sector, while at the same time, not working from a annual budget for 4+ years, displays a lack of knowledge, understanding and ideas on how to help the current economy move forward.

The question Cynthia is who is responsible for giving them that easy money?

George Bush. One of the worst president ever.

He gave away trillions in tax cuts and cost the country trillions in dollars for two wars.

        Nice going Bush.

In another post you stated that Congress passes bills and now here complain that President Bush single handedly took us to war. News flash! BOTH parties voted to fight and fund these two wars. That would include Dems like: Clinton, Kerry, Pelosi, Reid! That is a fact! Sorry to break it to you but the Dems are just as guilty!

Caramon, until we scream it at the top of our lungs and DEMAND that those that received money be questioned about why $1 Dollar in every $3 Dollars of bailout money was WASTED on their own bonuses and not on recovery for mainstream American businesses the bailout was supposed to help – they will continue to be the criminals they are.
Here is where I think Obama has backed away. HERE is where I diss Republicans who block the running of the Consumer Protection Agency and the Dept. of the Security Exchange Commission who has yet brought ZERO players responsible for the crash TO TASK! – Even as the big banks still screw the world and get away with it. I don't want to ignore this and will never ignore it. None of us should.

Cynthia, you are the sane voice here. I can't believe the comments from the President haters.

Keep on spreading the news. Unfortunately, Faux News spreads too much lies and Repubtards like to drink it.

Fox news? I addressed this with you yesterday and you never responded.

So sick of his whining about it being someone else's fault. Why is he out flying all over the world pissing and moaning instead of doing his job. Guess he is too busy making history as the worst president yet.

If you make $30,000 a year your taxes have already been raised $43.00 a month.

How much more does Obama want to raise our taxes?

Come on people! Out of a $3.5T budget, nobody believes we have $85B in waste or pet projects (across the board) that can be scrapped, easily, quickly, and harmlessly?

All Obama cares about is making this as bad as possible because he thinks he can get back the HOR in 2014... which is highly unlikely according to every credible election source- NY Times, Crystal Ball, Cook Political Report, Washington Post, etc.
