It is time to continually cut the overgrown government. The generous treatment of the governmnet sector and "easy money" with TARP and stimulas has done little to fix any problems or encourage hiring in the private sector. BUT have done wonders in increasing funds to "green companies" and entitlement programs which disproportionately promote Democrat fund raising and votes. They have not been job creators that they were hoped to be. Asking why working Americans keep taking the brunt of higher taxes, food costs and fuel costs. Asking why government needs to keep increasing spending of borrowed money during a 5+ year recession when it should have been cutting waste and totally updating the tax codes to help create jobs in the private sector, while at the same time, not working from a annual budget for years, displays a lack of knowledge, understanding and ideas on how to help the current economy move forward.

Let me get this straight, was originally Obama idea for the sequester, then he couldn't get a budget done in time, well never has done one but that’s another story, he campaigned on how the world will no longer exist if the sequester goes thru, well has never stopped campaigning but that’s another story…now that time is up, the House offered him a bill for flexibility on how the cuts will be used but he refuses and threatens veto and more tax hikes??? My 9yr olds act more mature than this guy……..and could probably run this country better than him.......

The President may very well rise above it. But, it is an interesting twist. Beginning with his first presidency, many people accused Republicans of wishing for failure in the economy and hoping for unemployment to rise. Now, it seems the tables have turned. The President has laid out a pretty dim future. If he is right, the Republicans could look bad. What if he is wrong?

Well Caramon, if we are to believe anyone about this sequester, there is no way it can be good for the economy in the near term. Yes, we need to make budget cuts to eliminate waste but this approach was supposed to be just a way to scare Congress to work together. What we learned however is that Congress is too stupid to be scared into doing its job. Is that a mistake for Obama? Would we fault parents for scaring their kids to behave better? I suppose we can, if the kids are running our economy, good intentions regardless.

        March 1, 2013 at 1:26 pm |
      • steveo

December, you are absolutely corrrect when you say the GOP voted for it. Funny how the "party of no" supported the president on this and are still getting blamed, Anyway, what is missing from your point is critical to the debate. In late 2011, President Obama threatened to veto any attempt to block or change these cuts. I don't see folks talking about that all. It appears to me, the administration's plan has backfired badyl!

The sequester started in the halls of the White House
The president threatened to veto any voted that would attempt to block or change these cuts But yet, this is the fault of the GOP? No deal because the GOP would not talk about additional ax hikes when they were just hiked in January, once again with the support of the pary of no"? Where are the promised cuts? Honestly, I don't think this administration is serious about real cuts. Most of us remember the promise the halve the deficit in term #1.

While there is blame enough to go around, the primary offender here is the administration! The sequester started with them and any attempt to block or correct was threatened with a veto by them as well. So again, why exactly are the GOP being blamed for this?

        December,
If one is going to use "scare tactics", don't you think somebody should have asked "WHAT IF THIS DOESN'T WORK? WHAT THEN?". It didn't work so now what?

you said : What we learned however is that Congress is too stupid to be scared into doing its job

you: Is that a mistake for Obama?

        me: yes!

you: Would we fault parents for scaring their kids to behave better?

      • December 2012

steveo, you keep harping on leadership from Obama when it is obvious that the Republicans do not want to be led, not even by their own Speaker. Both sides have to get their act together but there is obviously nothing more damning than when your own leader is fed up with your intransigence. There is no unity there and that is the problem. Some of them even want this sequester to happen, they don't even pretend not to like it.

So yeah, even if they all get blamed for this, the President will not get blamed as much as Republicans. Even if you keep dwelling on the fact that he came up with the idea. Even if you are right to say he threatened to veto any bill to change the sequester as intended. History will still see it as a bitter pill to call the Congress into action, to come up with something better, which they all voted for and broke. Congress failed largely because Republicans would not budge and stated positions in favor of sequester. Is that fair? Probably not but they didn't do themselves any favors. They thought they could push this President around with their own agenda, they were dead wrong.

Anyway, I am hoping the sequester will not hit the economy hard but if it does, maybe only then will this Congress finally act. The President is waiting, the whole country will be waiting or come 2014 there will be consequences.

        March 1, 2013 at 2:12 pm |
      • steveo

        1. I used the word "leadership" one time! How is that anywhere close to harping?
        2. The president does not "lead" Congress, the speaker does. The president "works" with them!
        3. I thought I keep hearing "Nobody will get 100% of what they want"? I don't know about you, December but with the exception of a few instances that is all I am seeing and that includes the president. He did not get additional tax hikes, so we get no deal. on the other side, the GOP did not get what they would call substantial cuts and again we get no deal.
        4. If history blames the GOP on this more than the administration, history would be wrong and most likely written by the administration!

        March 1, 2013 at 2:23 pm |
      • December 2012

        1. Sorry, I mistook you from the trolls down here who kept harping. My mistake.
        2. Speaker Boehner said he will no longer work with the President directly, personally I don't think that was the worst idea in the world. The President should not be the one at the table with him, but other leaders in Congress.
        3. Well, Speaker Boehner was quoted for being happy because he got 98% of what he wanted with the act containing the sequester so I guess that's a pretty good deal for Republicans. The Budget Control Act contained cuts even to Medicare. Only after the election, after much bickering over the fiscal cliff was some revenue was put on the table but that is clearly not enough if the deal is to be balanced. If you want the President to give more cuts, all he wanted in return was to close some loopholes. Was that too much to ask? Apparently for Republicans it was.

        March 1, 2013 at 2:42 pm |
      • Caramon

Well, I am not certain if it really matters at this point who came up with the sequester. If the President states it was the idea of the GOP, then a majority of the populace will believe it. Sixty percent of the population vote party lines and probably pay little attention to the issues.

Both sides are taking a calculated risk. Many in the GOP do want the cuts with the hopes it will not have the detrimental effects as stated by the President. I believe the President would like to see the cuts do everything he said it would. Then comes the "I told you so."

According to Gallup, the general populace wants to avoid the cuts 45 to 37. But this would more or less be caused by the fear of what comes in the future. If it doesn't happen, the polls may shift. We really have no idea what is going to happen until it happens. Personally, I am hoping to find a 747 in my yard tomorrow. Then I can sell it for parts on Ebay.

No apology needed, my friend, I understand it is in the heat of the moment! We are cool!. I have NO issue with closing loop holes! In fact, it is past time to relook at the tax code anyway! We need some "out of the box" thinking up there! The same old has stopped working for us anyway!

What if we tried a flat 10% and very limited deductions (based upon an earnings ceiling of some type)?
This is what I see the problems are:
        1. polticians are more party minded than America minded
        2. We have no ingenuity in DC anymore
        3. At one time, DC inspired us as nation, (JFK's "ask not speech"!). Little to no inspiration now (hence the low approval ratings).

        The answer is really easy:
Do what right by the people and stop worrying about re-elections and getting credit! To, me is just that simple!

Politics should not be a career in the first place! A calling, yes, a career no! Some of these folks need to go home and live under some of these laws they passed! on the rest of us!

        March 1, 2013 at 3:07 pm |
      • steveo

        @Caramon,

You are correct! Most folks are sheep for the media's slaughter! In reality, does it really matter where the sequester started? Maybe for most the answer is no but as I see it it is important because there was an intent to start this. Decemeber pointed out it was to scare the Congress into action. For me, the intent to get the Congress to move was good. The method, was not as it backfired! The point now is here we are, where do we go from here?

        March 1, 2013 at 3:28 pm |
      • December 2012

You are correct. We need more reform minded people. In some ways this very ugly and very visible dysfunction is a good thing because it is waking people up to this fact so hopefully more people will start voting with intelligence and not just by party lines. Tax reform, term limits, campaign reform are on the top of my list. We may not agree on how big government should be but we should at least agree on a functioning government.

As for blame, I blame them all equally in fact. I'm just having a bit of fun with the trolls here. I got to say though Caramon, if you ever find some 787 batteries do let me know. There's nothing quite like flaming batteries in the morning.

        March 1, 2013 at 3:34 pm |
      • steveo

        @ December

I agree we currently have a disfunctioning government right now. We are supposed to be governed but with our consent! We give consent when we give our vote! That does not say much for us! As for the size of government, I am not sure but we need to keep reminding them, they work for US and not we for them! We did not vote for royality, we voted for public servants and I mean that with BOTH sides in mind!

As far as Caramon's 747 comment, I too thought of the Dreamliner fiasco!

Hey Caramon, you can have your 747! I'll take Holder's Gulfstream!

Speaking of flying, I'd like to say thank you to VP Biden, he is riding the train rather than flying back and forth to Delaware! .

The man is the VP, surely those of lower position can do the same!

        March 1, 2013 at 3:56 pm |
      • Caramon

Well December, I certainly hope people are waking up. I do believe our government is bent on scoring political points rather than solving the problems we face today. There may come a time when they all need to be replaced. It would send a very big message.

I will keep my eyes open for those batteries. A Gulfstream would work just as well .Just as long as it isn't one of those aircraft carriers. I pretty sure it wouldn't fit in the backyard.

Steveo, from your comment below. I would be interested in hearing what Cynthia has to say. We may not always agree. But she knows the issues. She would add to our discussion.

      Sue,

You want a DIAlog or a MONOlog? You want this blog to turn into a place where everybody sings the praises of the left only? I for one, am glad you don't own this site! I am interested in what folks like December, Cynthia L, Caramon, Jean, Moose, John, ADCD Guy, Cali Conseravtive and Jerry ( and many more) have to say. Some of it is silly and ridiculous and I disagree with some of it but some of it is actually informative! Sounds to me that this blog is democracy and the 1st amendment in action. Sorry that is not appealing to you but I like it as it is!

      March 1, 2013 at 4:14 pm |

Sue, you are perfectly welcome to add some real dialogue. However, simply coming here to insult people is not dialogue. It is no different than what you claim from the "right wing nut jobs." Do you have anything to offer about the issues?

      March 1, 2013 at 4:25 pm |

Well, I see that Moooooose has moved on to playing with his Pet Rock again. Those that speak of not 'gettin' any' are usually those that don't. That's where the Pet Rock comes in.

        March 3, 2013 at 9:49 am |
    • Caramon

Well Moose, I look at it this way. Some people come on this site to discuss issues. Other people simply want to give insult. I cannot speak for people like Steveo or December, but I welcome dialogue from both Democrats and Republicans. In many cases, we have found some consensus across the aisle. It really is up to you what kind of dialogue you want to engage in. But consensus is how we find the solutions.

      March 1, 2013 at 5:38 pm |
      • Steveo

Caramon, I am with you on wanting dialog from both sides. That is how we learn. I have agreed with Jean at times.. As far as I am concerned, truth is truth no matter who utters it.

        March 1, 2013 at 11:41 pm |
      • Bill In STL

Caramon, Steveo – Well said, could not agree more!

        March 2, 2013 at 12:07 am |
      • Caramon

Thanks Steveo, Thanks Bill. The truth is that we see good dialogue from both sides. We also see people from both sides who only insult. If we can get more people out of insult mode and into dialogue, then do you know what we have?

        COMMUNICATION!

Jean and I will perhaps never agree on anything. But we have had some good back and forth conversation. I have at times agreed with December and Cynthia. They have proven to me that they clearly know and understand the issues as well as given me a new view on what is going on.

If the economy tanks because of this sequester it will squarely fall on Obama's shoulders. His idea, his fault.

This reduction in growth could have been better targeted and we'll see in the months to come what the effects are. We'll still spend more this year than last year and if we can't get by with a miniscule reduction such as this then when will we ever get the debt under control?

    March 1, 2013 at 8:04 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

Hello, Frank Marshall Davis. I have to say right off the bat that I think your recent posts have revealed a person who is not afraid of reflection. The change in tone is welcomed and I wanted to say that even though we might see things differently, there is room to expand for everyone, myself included.
Personal story – about the Sequester affecting someone in my family who I think has been unfairly targeted for a deduction over those that squeal the most and for those that are happy to let them drown out reason.
My oldest son, having served in both Iraq and recently home from Afghanistan and well into his 9th year serving our country, just found out that 30 days of his still required hours will go unpaid. Doesn't matter if in those 30 days of unpaid service to our country, he STILL RISKS HIS LIFE searching for, rescuing and giving excellent care to those he helps survive. Putting an unbearable strain on his personal life trying to meet his bills? YOU BETCHA.
All while the Republicans are making a show of saving us money WHILE locking in the remaining 82 PERCENT of the Bush-era tax cuts – which were to expire and calling it a tax hike – refusing tho close loopholes MOST AMERICANS will never have the benefit of receiving but benefit the top 1% of our population.
Yes both sides are to blame. One side more than the other when they continue to threaten the downgrade of our credit rating for expenditures that were allowed by them in the first place and subsequent threat to not paying the bill during the Debt Ceiling talks. The Sequester was thrown in to keep them from doing an irresponsible act only to give us another irresponsible act today.
What is it about protecting the richest of our society at the expense of those that really serve our country, who want to send their children to be educated in decent schools, who want to pay their first responders, those that deliver our mail, keep us safe at our ports, borders and airports a fair wage?
The Congressional Budget Office – which is a non-partisan apparatus – has projected a loss of 750,000 jobs. How in the world does our economy be helped when those that REALLY EARN their money get overshadowed by those at the top that are happy to reap the endless rewards ABOVE the regular American experience?
Shame on us if we let this travesity continue without a fight.

The Republicans are Hellbent on destroying this Presidency and taking the country down as well for their Politics!

The Media keeps using the term Washington,or Congress, but everyone knows it is the Republicans in the House that are responsible and they will take a Political hit for this in the Midterms !

    Worst in our history..

    March 2, 2013 at 11:37 am |
    • Caramon

      B. If the Republican controlled House is responsible for the problems as you believe. Wouldn't that also indicate that the Democratic controlled House was responsible for the crash in the economy. If you believe the House controls everything then it works both ways. We have seen this blame game before. No matter where you put the Republicans, they seem to be in control of what happens. Before 2008, it was the presidency, 2009-2010 it was the minority, 2011 to the present it is the House. Is there anyway you could possibly explain this? So, would it really matter that the Republicans loose control of the House in the midterms considering they will still control the outcome?

      March 2, 2013 at 1:28 pm |
    • Steveo

Worst in history? Sorry B but it appears you have forgotten history. The Dems are just as culpable. Unless you believe Reid and Pelosi had a rosy relationship with Bush and always worked with him and disregarded their political motives! B you are not being honest in your post!

Thanks to both parties for this fiasco and for reminding us that every time a continuing resolution that is signed is yet another failing report card illustrating that you simply can't do your jobs and get a budget passed!! And those in the Tea Party whom took a "pledge" from the Grover Norquist Team, thanks for forgetting important things like being "for the people."

    I was not surprised to find that there was more in his name than met the eye – if you rearrange the letters in "G R O V E R N O R Q U I S T," it spells "R G O V E R N O R S Q U I T." Sad but true, thanks for quitting on America.

HEADLINE TODAY by CNN MONEY: The U.S. once again has the MOST BILLIONAIRES at 412 – a net gain from a year ago. Warren Buffett still says his tax rates are STILL LESS than his Secretary's.
The average net worth of each Billionaire was $3.8 Billion up ONLY (Waa-Waa) by $100 MILLION from a year ago.

IN OTHER NEWS – Mitt Romney wishing he was "THERE".

      • Steveo

        Cynthia L,
I was referring to the 1600 Report Blog but I'm sure you knew that. But since we are taking about Buffet, all he needs to do is give his secretary a nice rise and be done with it or he could write a check to the government or he can just be honest and state interest income is only 15% or he could lobby Congress to increase the rate of interest income. I have noticed he has not yet done that so I guess it is easier just to complain to the media that actually do something about like write a check to the Treasury!

        March 4, 2013 at 7:04 pm |
      • steveo

Correction. He could give his secretary a nice RAISE! Sorry!

        March 5, 2013 at 10:13 am |

Then maybe Warren Buffet could quit complaining about all his money and hire some people. That would help stimulate the economy and increase revenues. And yes, the same holds true for other Billionaires.

This is all politics. If Obama was serious he would have called the meeting sooner. If my taxes go up again, you'll see me at the White House with some protesters. Look, I keep hearing all of the things about how Republicans are the bad guys, yet you liberals, well, y'all can't deal with a simple, adult conversation. And I know y'all don't like to hear this, but many people don't want more taxes. Obama didn't win 99% of the vote, and his margin was somewhat close to Bush vs. Kerry- to think- as popular as Bush at this time.
