Christie comes to Washington

Washington (CNN) – New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie will be in Washington, DC Thursday for meetings on Capitol Hill and with White House officials regarding relief for Hurricane Sandy, according to a senior Christie adviser.

Christie's visit follows a similar trip to Washington earlier this week by New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, while both men push for federal funding to aid their states after the late October storm ravaged parts of the northeast.

Obama to hold 16th full press conference

(CNN) – When President Barack Obama holds a news conference on Wednesday, it will be the 16th solo, formal White House press conference of his presidency.

It will be his first since winning re-election and since the resignation of his CIA director over an affair – both topics likely to come up on Wednesday.

Obama has taken reporters' questions in a variety of other forums, most recently in late August, when he made an unannounced stop at the regular White House briefing for reporters in the midst of the heated campaign and a week before the start of the Republican National Convention.

He confronted criticism of a video produced by the main super PAC supporting his candidacy which appeared to tie Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to a woman's death, as well as stood by his call for Romney to release his tax documents. He also addressed the controversial comments on "legitimate rape" made by Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican U.S. Senate candidate from Missouri.

Obama camp allows 'off-the-record' interview to go public

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's campaign agreed Wednesday to allow the Des Moines Register in Iowa to publish an interview with the president that was previously established as off-the-record.

A transcript of the interview was posted the morning after the newspaper's editor wrote in a blistering blog post Tuesday that representatives for Obama refused an on-the-record conversation with the newspaper's editorial board, which is preparing to endorse a candidate for president in the coming days.

Obama campaign: Democratic convention will stall Romney momentum

(CNN) – Senior Obama campaign officials said Mitt Romney will likely get a boost from the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida next week–but it won't last long.

With the Democratic convention following the GOP gathering one week later in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Obama campaign feels confident the attention surrounding their convention will halt any momentum Romney may gain as the new nominee.

Obama says tax return fight 'isn't overly personal'

Washington (CNN) – The ongoing battle over Mitt Romney's personal income tax returns isn't personal, President Barack Obama said Monday, saying instead it was essential for voters to understand a presidential candidate's financial background.

Speaking in the White House Briefing Room, Obama pointed to a precedent on releasing tax returns that extended back to Romney's father, George, who ran for the GOP presidential nomination ahead of the 1968 election.

Romney: 'Even Jimmy Carter' would have ordered bin Laden attack

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama on Monday appeared to call out Mitt Romney over what he said about going after Osama bin Laden on the campaign trail four years ago, as opposed to on the eve of the first anniversary of the raid that killed the terrorist leader.

Asked about Romney's comments earlier in the day that the decision to go after bin Laden was a clear one and that "even Jimmy Carter would" have made the call, Obama referred to a difference between what Romney said during his 2008 presidential campaign and on the eve of the first anniversary of the attack.
